View Full Version : What would you take?
Here's the problem, I have several rifles I could use for deer hunting but with work and no range near by i have to sight in up in Saginaw which i don't get to often enough to do all my weapons. I have, Savage .30-06 (sighted in but never taken out to the "field"), Parker & Hale .243 (my standard hunting rifle, used for a few years), My new FR-8 .308 (never fired yet but im sure i will soon), 12Ga. Winchester 1300 (never tried hunting with a shotgun but would like to try sometime). Just wanting some input. My other choice is grab them all the next days im off and spend all day at the range. Life is hard ;f
P.S. I hunt near Indian river if that helps
take the .06 or the new .308
ps. my grandparents live in indian river.
I'd take the 30.06, most versatile.
How can you go wrong?
The 06 is already sighted, so take that. Best round ever!
I personally hate shotgun for deer. Too many shotgun only zones in NYS. Generally they are not accurate enough or flat shooting enough. Yes, it could be the hunter, afterall I have missed exactly 1 deer with a shotgun :) That image of perfect buck on a misty morning walking nearby as I sat in my tree stand, and then boom, followed by no deer and no blood and no hair, still haunts me to this day. Maybe he was just a ghost and wasn't really there in the first place.
Ditto on the 30-06.
It's already sighted in and the round will do the job. I took my 1st deer when I was 16 with my grandfather's 1903 Springfield.
There isn't anything that a scoped 30-06 can't do.
Take two. That way if something goes haywire with one or if you drop it on your scope or something then you'll have a backup and your hunting trip won't suffer. I'd take the '06 or the .308 because they're new and you want to hunt with them but just in case I'd also take along your .243 as a dependable backup because s&!t happens.
