I don't get asked that one. But what really drives me nuts is when people ask what kind of cannon they need to shoot a bear with. Then feel the need to argue that what I tell them is good enough is really to small. Now I really am counting the days till I come home.

i have had that, it is really irritating too when some one from like arizona is trying to tell you what to hunt bear with.....when the only one they have ever seen was in a zoo:tongueout:

Another fun one is telling some one that their fish of a life time is to small and needs to be let go. Can't say how many times a year I have to do this. Now if only I could get this naging little itch on my trigger finger to stop. The count down is on till I come home for the fishing season.

yeah i am gearing up for a spring bear hunt on the kenai.

and anyone else ever notice the irony in the fact that tourist season and the bear attacks are directly coorelated.....

Born and raised in Anchorage, lived their for 15 years, then parents moved to the east coast. Mom and stepdad ran a guide service out of Big Lake years ago taking Exxon oil big wheels on hunting and fishing trips when they installed the pipline. Never have got back yet, sure miss fishing for Silvers, and Kings, had a picture of a 11 pound Rainbow trout that I showed to some guys that fish the stocked ponds and streams for trout around here. They had never seen a trout that big in their life. They swear its a photo shop job, except the picture is so old and worn, all agreed it had to be real. Miss the summers, do not miss the winters!!

Anchorage, AK here. I was working for a software company based in Orange County, CA., and I was up here training some Muni-employees in the summer of 2004. One of the IT guys was retiring in a few months, and they asked me if I would be interested in his position. I told them to give me a call.

4 months later, they gave me a call and asked if I was still interested which I enthusiatically said yes. Pretty much did the whole application, interview process over the phone, and 2 weeks later, I was driving up to Alaska. What made it interesting was I did all this at the end of November. It made for a very interesting drive...hehehe maybe someday I'll have to tell that story :)

Some highlights:

1. I was trying to stay ahead of a snowstorm somewhere in Canada at night. I have pretty bad night vision and I didn't have any glasses which didn't help matters much either.

2. The trip took a couple days longer than I planned. The further north I got, the less daylight available, so I had to end my driving days earlier than I wanted.

3. My windshield wipers and washer sprayer stopped working somewhere in the Yukon territories. Apparently, the blue washer fluid I bought in California didn't necessarily mean that it was rated for below freezing temps., so when it froze up, I burned out the fuses.

4. Couple times I almost lost control when I drove on half snow-covered roads.

5. My defining moment during the trip - Trying to be the early bird on my last day driving, I left Tok in the middle of a snow storm. I ended up getting stuck in maybe a foot or two of snow an hour out of town. Hehehe I sat in the car contemplating my death for an hour or two until an alaskan utility truck stopped and asked me if i wanted a ride.

That's when I decided to tough it out, pulled out the snow-chains which took me another hour to get installed, and continue on. My windshield wipers weren't working and because I couldn't go very fast, I had to stop and squiggy the window with a wiper I pulled off the arm in order to see every few miles. The last few hundred miles to Anchorage took me all day.

Hehehe there wasn't much else for me to do, turning back wasn't an option so I can't say it's something to be proud of, but it makes for an interesting story. The two things I really enjoyed about the drive were the epic scenery and the chance to feel like the last man on earth.

I guess I should mention that I was driving a 2001 Chrysler 300M.

I could only imagine. On my way in, I saw some guys in U-hauls towing a car on a trailer going the opposite direction. I bet it was not fun, but who knows, they may have been used to driving in snow conditions. I surely was not.

Sounds great. After some safety training, I'll definitely hit you up :).

On my way home! Counting the hours and hoping that dear ole dad hasn't played a cruel joke and change my safe combo. Should also have a good old used glock 20 waiting for me!
