View Full Version : 6 1/2 FT. 130 LB. Tarpon
caught it this evening after work around 7. we were in a 20 ft flat bottom about 100 - 150 yds. offshore. out of four of us, we had never seen larger or more pods of baitfish. we figured since there was so many live fish, they might like an easy meal of fresh kill. after smacking the little buggers brains out on the engine, we cast 4 rods and i got a bite in about two minutes. what a fight! so sore, so happy! i got him to the boat after an hour or so fight w/ 30 lb. line safe and without attracting too many sharks (one almost got him). we pulled the hook revived him and off he went. this thing had the biggest eyes i've seen on any animal. what respect i have for the species now. anyway, i already bragged to everyone in town so if you get a chance, land one of these fish, you'll never forget it.
Congratulations! Very nice fish...veeery nice. Thanks for releasing him.
Tarpon are great arent they. We are in the middle of our fall feeding right now, jumped 9 last nite, landed three. We will have about two more weeks of absolute chaos then it will be over and we will have to fish for trout reds and flounder. Boy my life is rough.
Congrats that is a big Tarpon. What kind of hook did you use, Circle?
Sharker - good call I did use a circle. i also forgot to say we used pogi for bait and they were big ones. we chummed a good 20 lbs. or so worth then cast in the middle. this was acually more like a 1/2 mile or more off vilano north beach. going to put the boat in the water this afternoon at Matanzas and head over to shark bite beach, we heard the pogi pods were moving south. Good luck to ya!
Here's a picture of my Dad's 150 lb Tarpon he caught fly fishing in the Florida Keys a couple years ago:
