I would think that summer and spring are great time to keep them open. For summer, the children are out of school and can spend quality time with family at the range understanding firearms and stay out of trouble.

Is there any political reason to keep these ranges closed after March?

I have no idea where you're from but in MN the ground freezes very hard and it results in ricochets. I don't think we have a lot of outdoor ranges.

Dude,

This is Old Dominion Glocker forum so I am from most likely VA. Also, the ground doesn't freeze between March and August, which is when the ranges close.

Just an idea! Are these free public ranges in the same area as public hunting areas. If so, just a thought, that with wild animals having little ones, in the spring, no shooting may help the maturation of newborns.

Most of the free public ranges are run by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for hunters to sight in their rifles.

Their openings pretty much coincide with hunting seasons.

DGIF doesn't have the funds to keep them open year round. The only other option would be to have fewer ranges and have them open year round.

No hunting during the summer months.

These free ranges aren't closed

Im across the river in Md. The public range that I shoot at stays open all year round, it is also in a public hunting area. It does close for one week during Gun season for Deer. Not sure about Va, ranges, normally its a very gun friendly state. Is their someone who opens and takes care of the range? Maybe they could give you an answer.

Where might this public range be?

There is a public skeet/trap range near Chantilly/Bull Run that stays open.

But it's not free and only shot trap, skeet, and 5 stand.

I'm sure the OP is talking about the WMA ranges that DGIF runs, they are only open September through March.

There are some USFS ranges that are free and open year round.
