View Full Version : Torrents and how to use them??
OK...this may be a dumb question. I would like to know what torrents are, how to use them and can they be used with Macs. Is downloading them different from the normal P2P situation? What is the benefit, if any, to using torrents?
BitTorrent is a method of P2P file transfer that allows multiple people to share files...I don't know if it works with Macs...To download Torrents you must first download a Torrent client, I like BitTornado...The benefit of torrents is the speed that you can achieve of downloads and uploads...
The .torrent itself is independent of a single OS. You would need to find a torrent client that works for your setup. <insert legality lecture here>
I've been using torrent-flux for years. It runs via apache and has proven to be the best one for my purposes.
Transmission is a good Torrent client. I also really like Ktorrent, but I don't think it has a Mac/Windows version. Others to look at are BitTorrent, uTorrent, and quite a few others...
uTorrent here...very small footprint ;)

Hopefully your ISP is allowing file sharing. Comcast shut it down here in Seattle as far as I can tell. After a couple of minutes with any torrent going, I have to reset my modem.
A torrent is just a file with information on a file and how to get it through using the bit-torrent protocol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol)
With a client like utorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/downloads/mac) installed, you could go to a site like http://linuxtracker.org/ download a torrent. Utorrent should recognize that you've downloaded the torrent and use that info to start downloading the linux OS associated with that info. Since it's p2p, you're downloading from multiple people and uploading to multiple people. Everyone's sharing, more available bandwidth, less weakpoints. If instead you went to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download to get their linux OS, you'd be downloading just from them - their bandwidth plus no access if their servers went down.
It's pot luck dinner vs having one person cook for everyone.
Doesn't the Opera web browser actually come with a client built in? I've never tried to use it on my Mac, but I know it works in Windows.
To download via torrent:
1. search for torrent file of what you want to download in torrent host sites like mininova etc.
2. download torrent file and open with torrent client like bitcomet, azureus, utorrent etc.
3. torrent client manages the download till finished.
