View Full Version : Obscure movie gems
There have been quite a few movies I've enjoyed on DVD, but
none so much as something bought as an afterthought in the
bargain bin, which then turns out to be a surprising gem.
Anyone else run into these sort of rather obscure wonders?
Heartlands (2002)
Michael Sheen, Mark Addy, Sandra Robbins, Jim Carter
Dir. Damien O'Donnell
*Colin is a sweet but not very bright man living in a small town
who is stunned to learn that his wife Sandra has been sleeping
with the captain of his darts team. Learning that the two are
headed to a big dart competition away in Blackpool, Colin hops
on his underpowered mo-ped and pursues her.*
h.
Blast from the Past (1999)....he he.
Brendan Fraser (Adam), Alicia Silverstone (Eve), Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek
A family lived under the ground for fear of nuclear war. After 30 years, naive Adam goes out to check the world, do some shopping (using priceless old baseball cards) and hopefully find a girl. Nice dance sequences on Benny Goodman's "Sing, sing, sing".
Good entertainment from the $2 bin.
--------
Did anybody else see "Scaramouche" (Sabatini), on MGM the other night?
Enjoyed those long fencing scenes like I did decades ago.

Ordinary Decent Criminal
Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey) is a happy-go-lucky thief and head of a gang who takes delight in plotting and executing heists with the kind of élan that makes him a popular and charismatic figure in the very Dublin that he plunders. The story is loosely based on the life of Irish freedom fighter Martin Cahill, also chronicled in the 1998 film The General. Co-stars Linda Fiorentino.
The Usual Suspects
When five unacquainted scalawags are hauled into a police station to appear in a criminal lineup, they decide to pull off a heist together. The plan gets complicated, however, when they intermix with an underworld kingpin named Keyser Söze. Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Stephen Baldwin and Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey star in this intricately plotted, critically acclaimed thriller that won another Oscar for Best Screenplay.

I don't know if this is obscure, but I just scored "FLYBOYS" last night at Odyssey for only P175. I haven't watched it yet.
True Romance - Christian Slater and....someone
Dont know if it's obscure pero nuon ko lang nanuod at ganda pala
Written by Tarantino , nga lang dinedeny nya
Gangster movie w/ great dialogue at violent violence
Shaun of the Dead. Deadpan British humor (or humour) meets American zombie horror.
Grindhouse (Death Proof): Quentin Tarantino all the way. The final car chase sequence is a classic.
Kung Pao: Seventies Chinese kung fu movie is spliced with modern scenes. Stupid and funny.
From Dusk til Dawn ... directed by Quentin Tarantino. starring george clooney (hindi pa sikat) salma hayek and cheech marin.

That scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper was pure gold.
("eggplant", lol...) Gary Oldman was insane, and I almost didn't recognize
Brad Pitt in yet another scene.

Never saw it again, not on DVD, nor any other source.

Okay, I don't know if this is obscure but this is definitely one of the best conceived plot I have ever seen
Dogma (1999)
Who would have guessed that the latest battle in the eternal war between good and evil would take place in suburban New Jersey? In director Kevin Smith's 1999 comic fantasia Dogma, angels (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck), gnarly demons, a half-baked apostle (Chris Rock) and clueless prophets walk among America's cynics and innocents, duking it out for humankind's fate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogma_(film)
"Das Leben der Anderen"(2006)turned out to be a "surprise gem" as H. would have it.

sin city.
Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough, the corrupt, the brokenhearted, Some call it dark. Some call it hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home. Crooked cops. Sexy Dames. Desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge--others lust after redemption. And then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care.
