View Full Version : I need a new tent
I'm sick of my dinky little 2 man dome tent. Time for one I can stand up in. My only requirement is that it has a 6' or more center height. An optional rainfly would be nice too... So, what should I get?
The Eureka Equinox will meet your requirements. At 6'3" I can easily stand upright in this tent. While it's specs indicate a 6 person capacity, it will realistically/comfortably accomodate 4 adults and their gear. This is a durable tent with full rainfly. I have been very satisfied with mine.
Ditto on the Eureks Equinox/Equidome tents.
Also look at LL Beans family tents.
Sierra Designs used to make a large tent called the Mondo Condo.
Check the tents out at Campmor.com and also rei.com.
Good luck and Happy Camping!
my favorite tent brands are marmot, north face and mountain hardware. rei brand is also a good light duty tent, but i have questions about their durability if you are camping a lot.
one thing to look for a is a free standing tent design and that uses a hlaf clip half sleeve system. full clip systems aren't always the best because of their sturdiness in high wind and full sleeve designs are a pain to put up.
i use the marmot nutshell for car camping. it's a half clip, half sleeve design. very sturdy. even held out agianst a monsoon. it's a doable backpacking tent at just under 5lbs, but too heavy for my tastes. it might not be as big as you are looking for though. the only thing i replaced on the tent were the stakes that came with it. AZ ground is almost rock hard so the tubular aluminum stakes are necessary.
if you head up to rei in paradise valley they have great people to help you out and their having a sale right now i think.
mpol, I like those brands too but the "6' tall being able to stand up in it" criteria rules most of those out!
I have Sierra Designs, Marmot and Mt Hardwear! All good tents.
Check out Sierra traders .com to see what they may have.
that would be:
I slept in a modern style pains indin shelter one night that was magnificent. it was called a "megamid." i would not recommend this if you have alot of bugs because there is no bug net bet it should do alright in most other places.
I've got quite a bit of camping experience and have camped monthly with my motorcycle club. This has allowed me to check out many different brands of tents. For a mid priced tent I really like the Eureka! brand. I bought the model pictured below about 7 years ago for a family tent and it has held up exceptionally well. It has 6' 11" of interior height however at 20 pounds it definitely isn't a backpacking tent however I don't think any tents with the specs you want will be light weight. It also has a rainfly that works. I've camped at least 10 times in the rain with this tent and it stayed dry inside.
