Hey TangoFoxtrot.... speaking for MYSELF only, the deer herd where I hunt is extremely small. I have gone years without even SEEING a single deer, let alone shooting one. The pic I posted above is my first handgun kill after stalking what I thought were several does. As it turns out, this guy I got was hanging out with about two other does. At 15 yards (the distance of my shot), there was no way to tell them apart as far as being male or female. That being said, had there only been one deer and he was the one, I would have taken him. Had you been in my situation of hunting for 14 hours a day for 10 days straight in 5 degree weather....sometimes for more than a SEASON without seeing anything.... you might understand. Oh, and before you say it.... NO, the deer herd isn't small because of "people who shoot button bucks" etc.... its had a low deer count for years and years despite low recorded deer harvests every year.

Try and not assume things about where people hunt or what people "should" do. Heck, I normally shoot does because I prefer their meat to buck meat but things didn't end up that way that particular season.

+1

plus: the bucks I shot are roebucks i.e. the male roedeer - they don't put on much "antler size" in the first place and if a 2 year old still only has spikes, it goes straight to the fridge, end of story.

This one I took 2 weeks ago and it is one of the better bucks shot in the past 15 years:

There are several theories about that, one is that it is a genetic defect, another one is, that this is somehow related to a kidney malfunction.. have never seen anything like it before and only took the doe to put it out of its misery because I saw her limping and hobbling around

Why not? Not everyone hunts for a trophy. A lot of my employees hunt to put meat in the freezer for winter. Thats why states offer both doe and buck tags. If you have both tags why does it matter which you shoot? My first deer was a button buck, which I though was a doe. I had been hunting all season and this was the first deer I saw on the last day. I would have taken him not matter what unless he had spots....

I shot this 6x6 elk less than an hr. from Las Vegas, Nevada. Took me about 10 years to get drawn and now I can't put in for 10 years so this is once in a life time hunt.

I went to Bass Pro and bought the Primos elk calling pkg, watched the video and hit the mountains scouting and calling for a month before season started. After 9 days of hunting every day and passing up many spikes and a nice 4x4 I took this 6x6 on my last day of hunting without taking more vacation.

He is not the biggest but I am very happy and hooked on elk hunting. I lived in Alaska for 5 years in the late 70's and shot moose every year with a model 70 .338 mag, but this is my first elk and used the .338.

I use a Steyr ProHunter in .308 win with either an EOtech(only for driven hunt, tracking wounded game and other occasions where fast target acquisition is important) or a Meopta 3-12x56 scope for boar and roe deer, because bullet diameter has to be greater than 6,5mm and the energy at 100m has to be 2.000joule or more for hunting boar.
I shot a rather simple 170grain softpoint for a long time but now switched to the 150grain interbond, basically for accuracy reasons.. 100m/5shots:
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8241/strn.jpg

;)

The other rifle with wooden stock and the heavy barrel is an Anschütz Matchrifle in .222Remington which is the legal minimum caliber in Germany for Roe deer. I must admit, I'm not really convinced, the .222 is "enough" for Roe deer, though.. adult Roedeer weigh roughly around 15-17kg gutted, fawns in winter about 10-12kg, so I reckon they are smaller than your Whitetails. I have not seen a Whitetail, though

for size comparison, male young roebuck:

and me, checking the tar on the tree. why the revolver you might ask?

Your adult Roe Deer are about half the size of our south eastern white tailed deer. The deer in other parts of the country are a bit bigger. Although in doing some deer culls I've seen a lot of yearlings that were about the same size as your roe deer.

And I fully understand the concept of a back up gun on the hip. I am surprised that you are allowed to carry it though. Is that only allowed when you are on the hunting property?

Here in my state we only have a minimum caliber of .24 for big game hunting with a rifle. If you want to use a handgun it has to be larger then .24 caliber and at least 350 ft lbs of muzzle energy. That varies a lot form state to state with some only specifying you need to use a centerfire rifle and others specifying certain calibers.

as a hunter, we are allowed to own two handguns basically for finishing wounded game, self defense is sort of a grey area there..
we are allowed to carry it unloaded if on our way to or from our hunting property and loaded on the property. have to unload it if being in a car, though.

lots of German hunters carry the Walter PPK for that, although it is a bit.. well .. weak :D

Some outdoorsy shots! Very well could have stumbled upon this little fella while hunting or fishing. I am usually a kill on sight type guy for venomous snakes but this little dude was pretty cool and very, very fiesty! I almost ran over him sunning himself on a desolate road after meeting with a client yesterday for work. I had about an hour down time where I was waiting on the client since I came from another job and while in the truck saw the black masked racer a couple times before I finally got some pictures of him too.

Both will live to see another day...

http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/3932/snake2.jpg (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/snake2.jpg/)

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2919/linef.jpg (http://img291.imageshack.us/i/linef.jpg/)

This little fella was quick! He tried crossing this road twice but I interrupted his journey trying to ease toward him to take pictures thus sending him hauling ass back to the grass, I eventually got a few pictures but was sitting in the truck so they are nothing special. Saw two more today but didn't have the camera with me.

That's just one of the reasons for the backup gun on your hip. Many folks like to keep the first round or 2 in the cylinder loaded with snake shot. A shot capsule like a shotgun shell. Not very effective past 10-15 feet (3-5 meters).

nOvember, Great shots. Are you taking the geese on the wing? Why are you greasing the Foxes? Are they good eating? I am in no way squeezing your shoes or giving a hard time, I am just curious.

Have you ever had venison over here? I wonder how Roe Deer compare flavor wise? Great shots and thanks for sharing them with us.

BTW, what caliber is your pistol?

nOvember, Great shots. Are you taking the geese on the wing?
Yes, usually I wait for a broadside and then take them rather high on the wing so the breasts are not damaged.

Why are you greasing the Foxes? Are they good eating?
Hell no, I reckon a fox is among the last things I would eat. Have you ever smelled a fox? I shoot foxes basically to control their population and by that control the predation on other animals. Especially when it comes to pheasant, hare and partridge, keeping the fox population at the lowest level possible is crucial. Same with badgers.

Have you ever had venison over here? I wonder how Roe Deer compare flavor wise?

unfortunately I haven't, no.

BTW, what caliber is your pistol?
The revolver in one of the pictures a few posts back is a s&w 581 in .357mag, I usually carry a Glock 22 in .40s&w, though.

Yeah, if hunting in a hunting system like you do, I would probably not care about population development, a population adjusted to the habitat etc. either and just kill for the trophy.
But as I see myself responsible for the area I hunt on and aim at having a proper deer population, I hunt responsibly keeping the greater picture in mind. That does not only mean shooting does and fawns but also shooting yearlings, spikers and so on. Especially button bucks and spikers as in my previously posted picture are evidence, that the population is too high for the habitat and has to be reduced. For every "trophy" buck I shoot, I shoot about 2 does, 4-5 fawns and 2-3 yearlings. That's the way responsible hunting goes. At least where I come from.

who is responsible for managing deer population over there?

Each state in the US has a game commission or department of natural resources that sets the rules and regulations for hunting and fishing.

Here in Virginia it is known as The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Their web site is here: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/ But I'm having problems accessing it at the moment. They just released the latest regulations for this hunting season in PDF format so maybe too many people were downloading them.

On top of that private land owners or those who lease land for hunting can and often do set their own rules for hunting of deer to try and manage the herd.

For instance I archery hunt on one small property where the land owner wants every single deer we see shot. There are too many in the area and they are way over grazing. So I follow his rules.

On another property I hunt on we try to manage the herd for larger bucks so the rule is no bucks smaller then a 6 point. You can shoot as many doe as you want or have tags for. Most of us that hunt the property hold out for even larger trophy bucks but will shoot several doe.

Shooting of spikes is pretty controversial. Some feel that you shouldn't shoot the small deer and let them grow up. Others feel that a spike buck is inferior and should be culled on sight.

I have no problem shooting a spike. You can't eat the antlers. This one was on the small archey property.

Edited to add:

Just found out why the DGIF web site is down. http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=600&sid=2037344
The Virginia Information Technologies Agency says it is working to resolve a server problem that is affecting 24 different state agencies.

it is a european magpie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Magpie), they are quite difficult to hunt because they don't come out of the hedges very often and it is hard to attract them with decoys and calls. taking them with the rifle is problematic as well because they tend to stay on branches of trees and hedges and there usually is no backdrop.

A business trip to South Africa last year landed me in Krunstaad(sp?) where I took a springbok with a borrowed 7x64 Brenneke. This was definitely "soft" hunting but it was the very end of the season (skittish animals) and we couldn't get within 400 yards without spooking them. Finally we set up in a blind and this guy came in about 200 yards with a few of his friends.

Here is a Pronghorn Antelope I got on my good friend's Four-Way Ranch on the Canadian Breaks in the Texas Panhandle in the mid-'70's. Fair hunt. Stalked him for four hours, the last hour on foot. If his "ivories" had not been broken off in a fight, he would have been Boone & Crockett. If you notice, I am carrying on my hip a S&W Model 19 4" .357 Magnum. My rule was that I would never walk up on a horned animal without a pistol.

Whats going on guys? Sorry I haven't been on here in a while. Haven't done too much hunting but we've had a few good ones so far. Here are a few pictures!

Had an AWESOME teal opener as well! I helped "guide" these young men at a Disciple Now dove/teal hunt, the first teal my dog brought back for the 2010/2011 season just so happened to be banded  What an awesome morning! We ended up with 8 limits for the kids (1 young man did not have a license so he just took pictures). None of the three adults shot.

Southeastern Kansas.

The 14 point was taken on public hunting land, the 11 and 10 were taken on private farm land. All three were taken within 20 miles of each other.

That's awesome! I've hunting these guys for 5 years with a bow and have yet to put a tag on one. Every year I get closer and closer and think "this is the year!" I guess the excitement and constant growth is what keeps us coming back and trying every season.
Thanks for sharing.

I knew this buck from my trail camera and decision was made to take this one if opportunity presents itself to avoid whatever it might be to spread among the others.

well, a few days ago while driving through my area I spotted it in a meadow, roughly 180meters away. not very spectacular, I got out of the car, loaded my anschütz .222, flipped open the harris, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, boom.

What model of Glock is that n0vember? Looks like a 20/21 to me but might very well be a 17 that just looks big due to the angle?

Anyway, awesome pics Sir, keep them coming!
