Do you have any knife training that would influence your knife choice? Are you going to be carrying here in Florida or elsewhere? Are there any specifics of YOUR life that would impact the choice (travel, employment, school, etc.)? Do you have a concealed carry permit or do you need to stay "ordinary citizen" legal?

Coldsteel Recon 1 (http://www.coldsteel.com/reconi.html) $120 I think.

or Coldsteel AK47 (http://www.coldsteel.com/ak47.html) $99.99

I have both of these knives and they are great knives. they keep there sharpness for a very long time.

Kershaw G10 Tyrade.

I'll second that.

There are just way too many choices. My criteria is at least a 3.25" non serrated blade w/ ambidextrous opening since I'm a lefty. That said, I carry on right side to defend against a gun grab if I need to. Blade and handle material are less important to me. The one that feels good in your hand is the keeper.

I'm partial to Kershaw since they are made in America. Benchmade has great stuff but they priced themselves out of my budget years ago. People dog CRKT but the ones I have, I'm quite happy with. Cold Steel designs never interested me.

Zero Tolerance (Kershaw's Caddy of their brand) ZT 0200, just got one last month, and love it. $128.00 out the door, pocket clip is easily moveable for right or left pocket carry, tip up or tip down. Blade tension is easily adjustable. Kershaw quality, plus they'll stand behind their product forever should anythiing go wrong with it!!!

The G10 Tyrade is basically a ZT0200 with a composite blade....for $87.00.

Steal of the year, and very limited sprint run.

Gerber's Applegate Fairbane Combat folder. Awesome knife, I have one and love it. I features a lock that basically makes it a fixed blade when engaged

Here's what I wish they'd make:

Heavy blade (.15")
3-3.25" blade length
No more than 5" closed
Ambi clip
WAVE feature
AXIS-style lock.

Unfortunately, you can't get that knife. The truly closest is the Cold Steel AK-47. But it's honkin big in comparison. I think it's 5.75" closed. Too long. And the blade, while the right thickness, is too wide for every-day use. (And this from a guy that uses an aggressive looking Mini-Comm every day.)

I wish Cold Steel made a AK-47 Mini. Shave an inch off of the handle and a quarter-to-half off the blade. It could be done.

That is simple but you will have to spend a few more bucks when you can. This question always comes up in class. Spyderco Endura or Delica hands down. Here are the reasons-

Availability, if you ever loose it you can always get another. Chinese knockoffs can be found all over the world if you are in a pinch.

Can be set up for tip-up/tip-down, or right/left handed. We teach tip down, strong side.

The number one thing the Endura and Delica have going for them that many high end tactical folders marketed for SD don't is that they have is a readily available trainer that is as high quality as the live blade.

The stumbling point for using folders for SD is not lock failure but being able to deploy the knife under stress. This is why we teach the basic Inverted Edge Tactics course with folders. A five year old can take a fixed blade and cut you, the rub is being able to deploy it when you need it. There is no safe way to practice this without a trainer.

Picking up an Endura or Delica along with the trainer and seeking some training will be a great addition to anyone's personal protection plan.- George
