How many rounds do you place in your AR Mags? I read in the US Army manual that it recommends 28 or 29 because a full mag with 30 rounds might be difficult to insert with a closed bolt.

full 30rds in a magpul pmag..you can actually load 31, i guess the extra round is for easy insertion if the mag is fully loaded to 30

I usually try to make them feed from the right, hence I load up to 28, although if I know that I'm going into a full-blown fight, I load 30 rounds per mag.

All my SHTF mags are stored with only 28 rounds. Less stress on the spring, as well as easier inserting especially if bolt is closed.

Me too, 28 rounds in my ready load of six aluminum mags, 30 for Magpuls. This is because if you load a full 30 rounds it may not seat on a closed bolt. PMags, on the other hand, can be seated on a closed bolt with a full 30 rounds. I saw a competitor at a rifle match that used a full load in a 20-rounder. At his first shot, down went his mag, to the amusement of the spectators.

My usual SOP when inserting a mag, either closed or open bolt, is to slap it in place, then tug on it to be sure the mag catch has engaged.

The Mag LULA is a great way to load a mag to full capacity, once the mag is full you can't sneak in another round because the loader will pop out.

Not a problem loading a full mag (20 or 30 rounder) on an open bolt. But when the bolt is closed when loading a full mag, I find it hard to seat the mag in place.
