I'm looking for some advice here. I have a 500a w/ the Spec Ops stock and I love it. However, the location of the safety drives me nuts with the pistol grip.

This has me looking at the Maverick 88 which has a great safety location and all of my parts will fit on it. My only issue is the forend.

Has anyone ever had a problem with the forends on a Maverick 88? I've heard of the arms coming apart from the plastic forend. Is this internet BS?

Also, can I just swap out my 500a forend and action bars with the 88s or are they different?

I would bring the 500a back to stock (with the cheap 88 forend) and just stick it in the safe for back up.

Any help would be great. Anyone own both?

Well I don't have a Maverick 88. But on the Havelin Gun Parts web site they say this about the Mossberg 500 fore ends:

NOTE: Since 2006, most new 500, 535 and 835 sporting shotguns with synthetic forearms may not use an action slide tube at all; rather, the pump handle will have two integral bars pinned into the handle itself. If you have one of these, you cannot use a forearm that was designed to go over an action slide tube without first buying the correct length tube and action slide tube nut.

Sounds to me like they have been using the same forearms on the Mavericks and the Mossbergs with synthetic stocks since 2006.

You can order parts from here:

Interesting. I think I purchased my 500a in 2006 but it does have a metal tube that the plastic forend screws into. The Maverick 88 I was looking at has the plastic forend right on the mag tube. I'm still not sure if you can swap them.

CTfam do you have the Knoxx fore end on your 500 or the stock one?

I have the stock one on it. I tried the Knoxx one but it didn't work out for me. The Hogue rubber feels good but I found if I was racking the slide fast sometimes I put a little twisting pressure on the pump and the rubber would drag on the mag tube slowing me down. The Hogue forend is cut to fit tighter around the mag tube then the stock forend which has more material shaved down around where it meets with the mag tube. Even if the stock forend dragged a bit (it doesn't) the plastic is slick so it wouldn't catch. Hope I'm explaining this clearly. I'm fine with the stock forend.

The reason I ask is I bought a Knoxx NRS stock and it came with a free Knoxx fore end. I can't use it because I have a Maverick so my fore end does not come off. If anyone wants it they can have it for shipping cost.

That's very generous of you. I'm sure someone will take you up on that. Let me ask you. How is the forend on the 88? Does it look like it's built tough? I've heard that is a week point on them. The pinned construction. I like that safety location though...:dunno:

I've had 3 of them and never a problem with any of them.

You're forend comes off, but you'd have to replace it with a mossberg slide tube assembly to use an aftermarket stock. I haven't yet convinced myself that I dislike the stock forend enough to replace it.

Mine seems pretty well constructed. It feels a bit "loose", but I find I like that.
It makes the whole thing feel slick... fast... The only problem I have with mine is that the glued on sling swivel on the stock fell off... I'm gonna drill it and put a normal threaded sling swivel in it's place.

Midway USA had 7 3/4 inch slide tubes in stock for the mossberg 500 until today. I'm afraid I ordered the last one to put on my Maverick 88. I plan on putting a hogue forend on my 590, and putting my 590 forend and the new slide tube on the maverick. Midway charged $67 for the slide tube. I'll let you guys know how the changeout goes if you're interested.

Nice. Good to hear people are content with the 88 forend. I may just pick one up and check it out for myself.

My Maverick 88 forend broke at the cheap plastic pin which was holding the forend and slide arm together. I have been trying to find a maverick forend for months with no luck. Do I understand you right? All I have to do is replace the forend slide assemble to a mossberg slide assembly and I can use Mossberg 500 stocks?

I would just ditch the Maverick forearm unit entirely as it allows you no options. Then...

You can buy a 7 5/8" action slide tube from Havlinsales.com for $46

http://www.havlinsales.com/model500.htm

and with that, you can put the Mossberg polymer tactical forearm as shown on this stock Persuader:

http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/zmonki/Shotguns%20and%20RIfles/Mossberg500A185.jpg

OR, you can put on one of Havlin's "recycled" wood ribbed forearms as shown on this same Persuader:

http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/zmonki/Shotguns%20and%20RIfles/500_Out_R.jpg

This works on the Mossberg 500/590/Maverick88

I just finished the conversion to wood furniture with bantam butt stock on my 500 (shown above) and I'm presently doing the same with my 590:
