View Full Version : The "bac1023 made me buy this" picture thread
just curious what everyone has bought after seeing/talking to him.
He said that once I go with semi-custom 1911's, I'll never go back.
He was right, my previous "expensive" handguns were a TRP and EMP
my 1st high end (not really a semi) purchase since talking to bac1023 was a 2011, though he doesn't have one.

Then i was hooked. The next was a Wilson, which was too good of a deal to pass up.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/Quackzilla/Guns/DSC_8422.jpg
Content for a while i was still lacking a Commander size. Got to fondle a KC, and ended up buying it
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/Quackzilla/Guns/DSC_9140.jpg
The rarity of the TGO1, qualitty of the Springfield Custom Shop and the deal i got at Bud's made me bring this home.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/Quackzilla/Guns/DSC_0300.jpg
I'm already planning on having a 1911 built by Springfield's Custom Shop.

When I ordered mine, the turnaround time was only a month, which is amazing. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it was longer now.
Those grips have the same traits as the Valor's, but Luke Volkmann will give you whatever grips you want. His 1911s are pretty much built to order.

I never felt a particular attraction to 1911's, although I always enjoyed Bac's collection when he posted pictures and comments. After collecting everything I thought I wanted, I started to appreciate the workmanship and beauty of 1911's a bit more and more, and last week decided to take the plunge.
This arrived the other day. It is a Ed Brown Executive Elite in the 5" government model. Bac, thanks for opening my eyes to this great, classic pistol. I'm already thinking about a commander size with a bobtail for CCW.

Thanks Bac! They're beautiful! Could you tell me if the Custom has anything noteworthy that is mechanically different than the other models?
Also, what is your opinion of the Cobra's snakeskin as compared to the more traditional checkering? I think they have a third option on the Special Forces that is called "chainlink."
And as long as I'm asking questions... on take down, do you favor removing the slide stop pin first, or do you prefer removing the bushing first?
Thanks!

Ron,
Remove the bushing first. Its much easier to remove the pin with no tension in the spring.
I like the Kobra's snakeskin pattern.
The chainlink on then Special Forces is nice too. I have an STI Trojan with that pattern.

The Classic Custom has the mirror finish slide, oversize mag release, checkering on the back of the slide, two piece guide rod, target sights, etc. I also added an Ed Brown mag well when I ordered mine. Its Ed Brown's top of the line 1911. That said, quality of all Ed Browns is the same, it just comes down to features.
Here's another view of it. You can see the mirror blued slide. Its a very well done 1911.

I take it that you find it highly reliable?

Yes.
It did have a hiccup or two during the first 50 rounds, which isn't totally uncommon for 1911s as tight as Dan Wessons are. It been perfect though about 500 rounds now.
They do have a great record for reliability.

Rinspeed, I'm honestly not sure. I think he's just overwhelmed with work.
There was a 5-6 month delay when they switched hard chrome venders, but the gun has been finished since early fall. I was then waiting for it to be reassembled and test fired.
Its been reassembled, as I got a nice pic of it that's going into a Guns & Ammo article.

All my 1911 forum buddies are catching up to me. ;)
I'll be back in the 1911 game next month, but I've been very quiet lately as far as 1911 purchases.
In the last 14 months, I've bought a total of 2. :crying:
That will all change in June though. I've got a few nice ones up my sleeve and then the Morris Tactical Elite in July, hopefully. :wavey:
I propose a contest:
The first person who can name 8 regularly available (factory, semi-custom, custom) handguns that BAC DOESN'T OWN. . . Wins $100,000 in Casino Cash!
By "regularly available" I mean nothing that is ultra-rare, only 5 were made. . etc. .
STI 2011
Desert Eagle 1911G
Rogers Precision custom
Springfield Loaded
DoubleStar 1911
Guncrafter's 1911
Para LDA
and anything that is in an Officer size

Very cool.
Unfortunately, I won't buy a double stack and/or double action "1911", a small frame model, or any 1911 with a rail, so that does rule out quite a few for me and most of that list.
I will be getting a Desert Eagle, Guncrafter, and I may even eventually get a Loaded even though I'm not a big fan of them. I want a Pro first. :)
As far as a Rogers Precision is concerned, maybe one day, but if customs are going to be counted, you could list several dozen. :tongueout:

It is decent. Its just not as good as its competition from Kimber and S&W in my opinion.

Gotcha..Main reason I got mine was, (a) it was in the case at my lgs (b) I got a good price on it for living in the PRK (c) the owner of my lgs wont carry Kimber anymore (he says its due to their CS dept.) That being said my Kimber Ultra is my edc.. I have not had a single issue with it.. so I have yet to experience their CS.

Springfield does have better CS than Kimber, generally speaking.
I love my Springfield 1911s. I just feel Kimber has the edge in enhanced 1911s below $1000.

Thanks guys for the comments. I too am glad that one of our members bought it
Spending that much on a gun was not even on the radar. However, getting a dud SRP was unlikely, and the price point was hard to beat. I put 250 rounds through it on Friday. It was my 2nd range trip of the day, so I only stayed fresh for about 30 minutes. During that time I felt like I was shooting laser beams. The accuracy of this pistol is ridiculous. Now if the shooter was a little more consistent...
The SRP is exactly how everyone has described - a shooter's shooter. It's a no frills working gun. The checkering really grabs your hand, similar to my old TRP, but a little kinder. Even the trigger is a little grippier than I've experienced on others.
A sincere thank you, Brian. You know it's good when even my wife approves :wavey:

Seriously, I think Baer may be the best built of the big five semi custom players, with Springfield Custom a very close second. I'm not saying they're as refined, but from a sheer build quality standpoint, they're hard to beat.
.
some day, but don't think it would be the for the 40th b-day.
maybe another Brown since i was born in Missouri, can get a custom serial number and laser engraving (if i choose to) :)
if i choose a brown, it would be about a 90day wait anyways.

How about an Infinity for something extra special befitting a 40 B-Day?
Brandon Strayer is a great guy to do business with. Though being a ground up custom built to your specs, lead times are longer than an Ed Brown.
Quack, with your knowledge, you would have an absolute BLAST with Infinity's Gunbuilder. You should try getting drawing one up and getting a quote for later reference, if nothing else. These guys build one hell of a 1911.

yea, after seeing bac's posts and his pics, those are the two i narrowed it down to... A TRP and Valor are on my list of guns to get (somewhat affordable). I still want a nighthawk custom also, but at 3k for 1, it'll be on hold for a SPECIAL occasion...
I think if it were full size I would already have bought the Valor, but it's the 4.25 inch commander size.
If I end up not getting it that will likely make up about 90% of the reason.

That's a beautiful gun.
I especially like the two tone look and the solid trigger. :)
almost bought it, but there is something else that i'm looking at too.

Hey Quack who made the grips on your KC?
I thought they were stock grips, but maybe I'm wrong.
They look very similar to the grips on my KC.

Wow Gary.
First off, :welcome: to the forum.
Secondly, where did you find that beautiful Unertl DLX?
I haven't even seen a Unertl on Gunbroker for over a year and that wasn't even the DLX. How do you like it?

Thanks I found it at a local gun show here in WI.I thought I vaguely remembered something about Unertl building 1911's.I went home and looked on the internet found a little info (mainly your posts) and went back the next day and bought it.I like unusual guns and the Unertl is that.I paid $1400,,but it only came with the soft case and 2 mags, no instructions, hard case or eye and hearing protection.
Gary
NICE!!!

Very cool.
Mine was unfired and complete with everything, but I did pay a bit more, IIRC.
I'm amazed that you found one at a show. I've been to dozens of shows here in PA and don't recall ever seeing one.

This one was fired, but it is the only one I ever seen. You go to enough gun shows you see just about anything once.I've thought about trying to assemble the complete kit.I think the hard case is a Storm 2100,were the other parts Unertl branded ?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary, I've had mine for so long, that I forget what all came with it.
I do know its a Storm hard case. I'll try to take a pic of everything tomorrow and post it.
BTW, I've seen all sorts of crazy stuff at shows, but never a Unertl. :)

I don't currently own a 1911. I did babysit one for a friend while he was doing a tour in Iraq. It was a Kimber Custom II. I took it to the range a few times but I was not able to shoot it as well as most of my other sidearms. I am sure that the inaccuracies were entirely my fault since others who have shot this gun remarked on how deadly accurate it was.
Anyway, since my experiences with the Kimber were unremarkable, I will probably not be seeking to add a 1911 to my stable anytime soon (I have a list a mile long of guns I want to add to my accumulation), however, I do feel that my collection will not be complete without at least one 1911.
I've been to dozens of shows here in PA and don't recall ever seeing one.
If you're referring to the Valley Forge show, I'm not surprised. ;)

Heres mine. I just installed this trigger with help from a few fellas here on glocktalk.
