I have a standard Remington Express 870 with a 5 shell capacity. Please give me some suggestions on an extended magazine that will not extended past an 18 1/2" barrel. Thanks in advance for the info!

You can get 3 shots in a magazine tube that does not extend past the 18 1/2" barrel. This is the guy to contact: http://gunconnectionmd.com/home

Does he have a better website, or could you actually list the product here?

The Remington LE tube extension will end flush with the 18.5" barrel and comes in a matte finish, Parkerzied or blued. However, the best one out there for the money is the Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech 2 round extension that sell for $45 anywhere and it needs no barrel bracket. The Remington tube kit has a barrel bracket that will mar your barrel down to bare steel and will often scratch the barrel and tube when taking it off to clean the weapon. The Wilson has a heay mag tube coupling so it needs no bracket, it has a better spring and a true combat follower. The Wilson will be short of your barrel by about 1/2 an inch.

That's the guy who used to come here to argue that made in China counterfeit optics were the same quality, just lower cost, than mainstream name brands. He was adamant about counterfeits being the same quality and durability wise. He had a one track focus on "cheap" and no focus on quality. Not a good combination for someone who manufactures something IMHO.

What is a good source for buying these extensions?

Dbuck, the Wilson can be found at www.brownells.com (http://www.brownells.com) or www.midwayusa.com (http://www.midwayusa.com) or even from www.wilsoncombat.com (http://www.wilsoncombat.com) The Remington on the other hand are kind of a silly inthat Remington still restricts them to LEO sales, yet they have been putting them on civilian models for years now. I can not sell the ones I get from Remington to civilians as I signed a "Limited Sales Argeement" and yes the same one all those others dealers signed and violate every day. However, the ones I do sell are gun smith take off that come of the 870 HD's we build our AI&P Tactical models on and I can sell them in matte finish and in Parkerzied as we bead blast and parkerize many of them. But the Wilson is the best value and as it needs no F'en barrel bracket it will not mar your barrel down to the bare steel like the Remington bracket does nor scratch the barrel and tube every time you clean your weapon. the Wilson has a better spring and a true combat follower....I get $80 for the Remington tubes and hate to loose sales but I always recommend the Wilson over the Remington any day.

The Wilson or Choate tube extensions are very good values. They will 3/8" short than the end of the muzzle with a 18.5" barrel. They were made for the older 18.125" barrels Remington use to put on the 870 shotguns.

Here is a picture of the Remington factory 6+1 tube extension kit. The indented ring 2.5" from the end of the tube limits the capacity to 6+1 by stopping the follow from passing. It will be even with the muzzle with a 18.5" barrel. It's a two piece tube extension.

Here is a picture of the high quality steel one piece 7+1 tube extension I offer. It's 6.75" long and even with the muzzle with a 18.5" barrel. In my opinion a Tact shotgun looks best when the extension is even with the muzzle.

Are these magazines difficult to install on your own.

Just remove the mag cap and spring then replace with the longer one and install the extesion.

But you will have to remove the dimples at the end of the mag tube. I drill them out with a 1/4" drill bit, deburr the onside of the tube, and cold blue.

No, they are very easy to install. Go to www.aiptactical.com (http://www.aiptactical.com) and under the customer service link is a How to video "Tube Extension kit" and watch that. Now there are some things with each brand that make it easier to install so once you select the brand you are getting just yell and if is one that I use I can give you some pointers.

My 870 came with the factory mag tube extension - allows 6 in the tube +1 in the chamber -

I do not see how it would be possible to get 7 in the mag tube - which is what I would think a +3 would do and not extend past a 18.5 inch barrel.

7 X 2.5 inches = 17.5 inches - which leaves only about 1 inch for the spring -

Even if it is possible - I do not want to over compress the mag spring - :dunno:

Every 7+1 gun I ever saw had a 20 inch barrel.

How much do you sell that extension for?

This is my 870 with the 6rd ext. It would be great to get a extra rd in the same space under the barrel.

I just ordered and received a 2 shot extension from the
Wilson Combat website, for my 870P. It is well made and sturdy.
I am returning it for exchange because I ordered one with the
sling plate which is permanently attached and I just wanted the
plain tube, thought I could remove it via a lock ring and put it back on later if I wanted to use a sling at some time. My mistake.
It is so well made and looks so good that I am going to get a second
one for my other 870 when I exchange it. And it is about 1/2 shorter than
the 18.5 barrel on my 870P.
They have a great customer service dept. at Wilson, if you have a question
they have a 1-800 #, they will help you any way they can.
You won't go wrong with a Wilson at $45.00. Good luck.

On another thread a person just pointed out to me that the 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shells are really closer to 2 1/4 inches not the 2 1/2 I have been using -

Since I just happen to have a couple fresh boxes of Remington buckshot and a tape measure -

10 rounds end to end = a hair over 23 inches - so 2.3 per shell is closer to the real length of a 12 gauge 2 3/4 shell VS the 2.5 I have been using.

so 2.3 x 7 = 16.1 inches - leaving 2.4 for the compressed spring.

Should work -

Anyone sell this 7+1 & 18.5 inch barrel combo?

I meant (but did not say) on a gun straight from the manufacturer.

Seems like this would be a cheap and easy way to add function and get a slight edge on the competition - or charge a couple extra $ for the gun - and the cost to the manufacturer would be a few pennies. :dunno:

When I bought my 870 with the 6+1 and 18.5 inch barrel it was $300 - if an 870 with 7+1 was sitting next to it and if it was $325 I would have spent the extra $25 to add the round.

I see Mossberg with a 7+1 but only on a 20 inch barrel - they could do 8+1 :wow:

I just looked at the Remington web site

Even though I normally use 2 3/4 inch shells - the 870 with the 6+1 capacity will hold 6 rounds of either 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells -

I just figured my gun held 6 2 3/4 or 5 3 inch shells in the mag.

Yea, you would think the manufactures would take the plunge to such a simple upgrade.

The Wilson Combat tube isn't available without a sling plate, but I know people that have used a dremel and ground down the weld and took it off themselves.

Dasanii19,

It's not listed on their website, but I talked to two different
fellows at Wilson and they told me to order an SGET-U-2, which
is a 2 shot extension with no sling plate. I ordered 2 yesterday.
They are $45.00 ea. and come with spring and hi-viz follower.
If anyone may want one of these, I would call the 1-800
customer service number and verify it myself, they are very
helpful there.
