I bought a membership for the range a few months ago and the doors are closed. Does anyone know what the deal is?

Edited: Please read NEW INFO in Post # 5 below!!!

pikenole,

I cannot find the story now, but I know I saw something in the local media a few weeks ago about bullets from the Smokin Barrels range entering the business (auto shop) directly behind the range.

I guess it didn't end well for them.

Darn shame that start-up businesses like this basically steal money from people for "memberships" and then shut down.

More like the impossible conditions ranges have to operate under, and probably to modify the range would be financially impossible.

I submit that if one intends to operate an indoor range in a semi-populated area then one of the first necessities is making sure that projectiles do not leave the confines of the range.

If keeping projectiles in check is an "impossible condition" then the range will lose every time.

That is a fundamental safety function.

Anyone have any clue as to what's required to open an indoor range in Hillsborough/Pasco counties - permitting, etc? I've done some searches in the past, but nothing really pops up - not that I'm in a position to do so right now.

Hillsborough County requires no special licensing or permit to operate a range - indoor or outdoor. Just the same business/occupational licensing as required of every other business.

The City of Tampa prohibits the discharge of firearms (and BB guns!) within the city limits unless permission is granted by the chief of police. This is why there are no indoor ranges inside the city limits. Magnum's Shooting Sports originally opened in South Tampa back in the late 1980's operating a range in a trailer. City code enforcement stopped it. Magnum's later moved to the county and became Shooting Sports (http://www.shootingsportstampa.com/), which is now owned by completely different people than than original owners.

I don't know about Pasco County. You can research Pasco's ordinances for free via Municode Corp's website (http://www.municode.com/library/ClientListing.aspx?stateID=9).

Wow, thanks... guess that's why I could not find any regulations!

I imagine getting insurance would be the biggest issue then ;-)

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

The city of Tampa (or any other municipality or county) has no authority whatsoever to regulate the discharge of firearms.

Brian - can you cite some supporting information?

The city of Tampa (or any other municipality or county) has no authority whatsoever to regulate the discharge of firearms.I understand why you post that opinion.

I am not aware of any case law specifically applying the Joe Carlucci Uniform Firearms Act (See FSS 790.33) (http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=Ch0790/SEC33.HTM&Title=->2009->Ch0790->Section%2033#0790.33) to the regulation of discharging firearms. Lacking a specific court ruling I would opine that the city would continue to enforce the current ordinance via Code Enforcement action.

As a result, while one could certainly open a gun range (indoor or outdoor) within the city limits, it would be wise to set aside a hefty budget for the court action that would most likely result.

me too. i have not been happy with a few things regarding these people, but i figured since i paid 4 a whole year in advance i put up with it and move on when it expires. have drivento the new location, and there does not seem to be any gun range, or place to put it there. guess i'm ripped off.I bought a membership for the range a few months ago and the doors are closed. Does anyone know what the deal is?

Looks like they have opened the range at the new shop.

Anyone been in to try it out yet? This new location is a bit farther from me than the previous one, just wondering if it's worth the drive.

They are closed again. The owner owed me a handgun. If anyone else is having problems contact me.
