I bought an SGL 20-41 today at a gun show (sales were s...l...o...w)...$599 + tax. I figured I paid about $2 more total than if I ordered it through the mail after transfer fees and shipping, but I can live with that.

That rounds out my collection, so I have at least one AK representative from every available country that made them, except North Korea, of course. My sole East German rep is built on a Romy receiver however, despite replacing several parts with EG stuff, so that may be a future project or replacement. I need to start diversifying now and maybe get an RPK or some more AK-74s. I may possibly switch out the gas block and front sight on the SGL and convert it to a traditional AKM configuration too. So many choices when it comes to AKs!

Bulgarian SSR-85C2, Chinese MAK-90, Czechoslovakian VZ-58 (cousin to AK), Egyptian Maadi, East German STG 2003C, Hungarian AMD-65, Polish PMKMS, Romanian G, Romanian AK-74, Russian SGL 20-41, Yugoslavian M-70B1, Yugoslavian M-70AB2.

I only wish I could afford such a collection.

You can, it just takes time, and money too, of course. I have been very fortunate though in that I fix/mod guns for the guys at my work, so I make a little extra on the side.

Awesome.

Sure would like some AK porn?

CarlosC

I'll put up some porn, possibly tomorrow. I have some accessories that have to go on first (Russian sling, bayonet, magazine) and I'd rather have some sunlight.

Congrats on your new rifle. Probably the finest AK you can get.

Congrats. I been on the look out for a plum furniture SGL 20-22
Did Bob and Jason have any SGL's on their table?

CarlosC
12-13-2009, 21:47
No they didn't. I did not have a chance to speak to Bob because he was pretty busy, but I talked to Jason and asked why no Saigas. I was surprised he told me people just don't want to spend that kind of money, so there is more popularity in the Romys. I think they've moved on from the AKs and more into the ARs. Too bad.

It does seem to run in streaks, doesn't it? The AK's were becoming very accepted and desired for a while there, and then demand simply ended a few months ago. The good news is that it looks like the prices are crashing in response to the decreased demand, which opens up some opportunities for those of us who are true AK fans.

She's hot.

You going to dress her different or keep her as is?

She's one sexy biotch, isn't she?

I am not sure if I should enjoy her simple beauty as is, or if I should give her a complete makeover. At the very least, I think she'll get some new clothes next year, probably some late model AKM Russian laminate. I may just go all out though and do some plastic surgery on her (replace the gas block and FSB with a standard AKM gas block and FSB, thread the barrel, install a slant brake).

Yeah, I'm already realizing in black my "Nadia" is a smokin ammo whore.

I plan on keeping an eye out for some wooden elegance to dress her in but no matter what she wears it won't keep her from her true nature.

CarlosC, Congrats! and thats an awsome price you pd. A couple of questions. I'm wanting to get one now,and want one with as good if not better than my slr 107fr. Which i think has a great fit and finnish. What made you choose the 20-41,over the others. and why did you wait to get the russian last. Basicaly i wish i had my rifle but it said made in russia. I don't mind spending the money if it a great rifle, being i'd be ordering it an not get to see and handle it first. I know the Arsenal bulgs are good. Do you feel the Sagia is of the same quility of material, steel, etc, and fit an finish as my slr. Hope to hear from you. TKS!

CarlosC
12-26-2009, 01:34
The fit and finish on the Bulgarians is hard to match, even for the Russians. I don't think the Russian finish is as good as the Arsenal finishes.

Why the 20-41? The 21 series were not available and the only difference is really the accessory lug. I had wanted either black or purple furniture and black was available. Originally too I had wanted the AK-74, but it was just too much.

I waited to get the Russian last because it was not available when I started collecting AKs. The Russians only actually became available not too long ago as Sporters. I did not want a Sporter either because I wanted the dimple in the receiver. Whent hey came out with the full-up AKs, they were very expensive, especially when I actually handled one. I felt they were nice, but not $1000+ nice. When they dropped in price, I felt the time was right to jump on one, but I did not have the funds yet available since I had just scooped up a nice Polish underfolder. I avoid buying guns with money from savings, so I just had to be patient.

Overall, I think the Russian Saigas are equals of the Arsenals except maybe in finish.

Carlos, Thanks for the info. I wanted your knowledgeable opinion. I was
probably hoping to be talked into or out of buying one. And i'm still not sure. Some would say just keep mine and buy some more mags and ammo
with the money, which i do need more of. Basicly i know there all good if
the shtf. And i would'nt want to throw mine down on the ground. But it's
good to know they can take a beating and keep on shooting. It's really
cool that you had the patience to wait and collect one from every country. That's awsome.

I think you hit on the main idea with AKs...they are all good when the SHTF. They are masterpieces of simplicity, which is the core of their reliability. Basically, they are the Glocks of the rifle world, and I am a big fan of Glock pistols too.

I would keep your Arsenal rifle, but try to raise enough cash to buy one of the Siagas. I have a feeling they may become scarce or expensive (again).

I completely agree with what your saying. A long time ago I would have never even dared to even handle one because of ignorant remarks made by shooting range commandos like "those are junk that will blow up sooner than later in your hands" or "cheap junk guns intended to last no longer than one drive-by". I was a die hard AR-15 fan that didn't really know what an AK really was. I cleaned and lubed my ARs religiously and spent countless hours at rifle ranges. Then one day I was shooting at a range near a marsh system in florida and a large wild boar pops out of the bush and charges at me. By the time I saw it coming, it was too close and I started running. It was a few feet behind me and I headed for the nearby pond figuring it would not want to follow me into the water. I dashed into the water clutching my AR and with my glock 17 in its holster. The second I stepped into the water my foot sank into some slimy muck I slipped and I fell forward. Me and my AR slammed into the nasty muck soil just passing a few inches of pond water. The boar did not chase any further but basically would not let me leave the water. What else was I to do? I lifted my AR covered in muck tried to rack a fresh fmj into the chamber and behold the carrier stopped before it made it into battery. I then tried to flush the rifle with the pond water but to no avail. My only chance of getting the hell out of the pond was now my 9mm glock. I grabbed my glock which did have some pond muck along the outside aimed at the boar's neck and fired 5 times. I hit something vital enough that it stumbled away slowly and later died. I have been a huge believer in Glock guns ever since. I sold all my ARs and started to research other rifles extensively. I bought my first AK not long after that. I went back to that pond and dropped my AK into that nasty muck. I picked it up allowed the barrel to drain and proceded to fire off the whole magazine. I been a fan ever since.

I can't bring myself to tacti-cool an AK...I just can't. It's not my thing, but I don't look down on anyone who does it. Come to think of it, I haven't tacti-cooled any of my other rifles (you didn't think I just had AKs, did you?) except my M-4, and even that is mild...

Probably, but I have way too many other AK variants I'd have to have first before I went the shotgun route.

And then there's my handgun collection, which is actually almost finished. I need a Luger. Some day.

Like a Valmet, Sig 550, and a Galil. Then maybe the RPK's, and maybe Krinks. Damn, you're just getting started!

CarlosC

The Valmet is a rare bird, probably not obtainable in the near future, but I can see getting a Galil, RPKs and a Krink or two. Let's not forget about Russian and Bulgarian AK-74s also, and I'd like a regular East German AKM. The one thing that I'd really like to get is at least one AK-47.

Yea I hear ya. Just giving you a hard time. I like tacti-cool, and don't look down on anyone who likes weapons in thier original beauty. Yes thats a very mild M4. I learned to love M16 and M4s in my military duties, but prefer my AK for when SHTF.
