How do the magazine extensions on these work?

How many 3 inch shells will they hold? Will it cycle 15 pellet 00 Buck magnum loads? What flash light options?

Want one for home defense but I heard its only 4 shots..

I'm getting an M4 in a week or two so I can add what I know from lot's of web research. They could only be imported with a 5 shot magazinee and have a solid block that fits on the last foot or so of the magazine. They used to import the 2 shot mag extensions, you can still find them on the market for sale but have the nitro pills ready they are pricey! They're easy to install just remove the barrel like you're going to clean it, unscrew the block, take off the snap ring. Install new extension and replace snap ring and put back together using the original mag spring.
I'm not sure on the how they measure round count, with 2.75 or 3" but a full tube should hold 6 3" shells easy I'd guess and they function just fine with 3" loads. I'm going to get a Surefire fore end for mine and put on an X300 wep light, lot's of options out there.

What is the capacity of the ones for the military? Why can they only import the 4 round ones? Why are the extensions so much? Does the military use the extended ones?

The military ones have the full length tube and are 7 shooters IIRC, the reason they can only come in with 4 round tubes is a little piece of nonsense legislation known as 922r. Extensions are no longer imported so those that have them are making a killing on those of us who need them, good ole supply and demand. For what it's worth the M4 is supposed to be just an awesome shotgun, I'm getting mine to replace a foolishly sold M1 super 90 that I sold a few years ago and frankly as an investment as well. These are very high demand shotguns and prices on them will just continue to rise, money well spent IMO.

How do you make it a 7 shot?
Would an after market hurt reliability?

I can only justify the money if I can have as many rounds as the military with as much reliability...

Several people are making mag tubes that you can buy. I have 1 on mine and they work .
They are less than the factory 2 shot extension.

Will an aftermarket 7 round make it as reliable as a military one?

Reliability shouldn't be an issue unless you go CHEAP on the extension.

Are they as good as USGI models? Im guessing the full length tube is better than an extension.

Is it possible to make it 8+1 like the military ones or are they only 7? I found here that they should be 8..

I have a full length on my M4 and they hold 7 in the mag tube and 1 in the chamber or in the carrier. 2 and 3/4" shells. 3" will be -1 in the tube. 2 pics attached and a pic of my new toy soon to be here.

I got my magazine tube from Freedon Fighter Tactical. It came with a Wolff mag spring. It will hold 7 in the mag so 7 + 1 + 1.

7 in magazine, one in the barrel, and one floating in the bottom of the carrier.

I've got Kip's (the carrier Comp) titanium full length, and all I can say is SUPERB. If he's still got a wait to get one, it would be my first purchase if I was buying another M4. I think I waited about 100 days to get mine, but that was when he was moving the machine shop, and had to find replacement machinists. I'm buying from him again once he releases the rest of his M4 components.

Here is where i purchased my full capacity tube for my benelli m-4. I can get 9 rounds (2 3/4 shells) in the shotgun 7 in the tube 1 in the chamber and one in the gate under the bolt. Ive never had any problems with this method.

The M4 will hold 7 + 1 for the military version. And it's extremely deadly. :D

It's always fun when I get to shoot free weapons and free ammo.

$150 for chromo steel? Kip's is Titanium for only a few bucks more. Trust me, with 7 in the mag, you want as little weight as possible.

Good thread. Now I'm considering a Benelli M4. Looks like they run about $1400?

polizei1

I believe retail is $1,800 on their website. I would expect to spend ~$2k or so, considering you'll probably want to get the extended tube.

Ummm...they're going for about $1400 on Gunbroker, then the mag tubes look to be about $150, so I'm thinking more like $1550 with the mag tube extension.

Well, that's why I specifically said retail from their website. Good for you if you can find it cheaper. Go for it, it's a fantastic weapon.

In order to be safe from 922(r), my recommendation is to replace the entire magazine tube with a full length US made tube. Dave's Metal Works makes a decently priced full length tube. The original short tube is held on with red Loctite so it has to be heated up to get it off, but once you get it off, replace the whole tube to add +2 capacity. If you just add the +2 extension, you run the risk of getting jammed for a 922(r) violation. Our Department authorized the Benelli M4 and did some exhaustive research on this. We can have the Benelli +2 tube on our personal shotgun as long as we are full-time sworn, but if we separate from the Department, they remove the +2 Benelli part and recommend we replace it with a US made full length tube.
