I have a 870 express magnum, wood stock, 28'' vent ribbed barrel. I want a home defense shotgun and am wondering should I turn the 870 into one or would it be better just to buy a Mossberg. I do use the 870 for turkey hunting. I wonder on the price for a mag extension and a shorter barrel if it is worth it. What do you guys recommend?

I recommend you simply get the 18.5" police barrel, fixed I/C choke for around $100 bucks and leave the weapon like it is. If you have to have an extension get a Wilson combat 2 round extension for $45.00. go to www.aiptactical.com (http://www.aiptactical.com) and under the customer service link you will find a how to video "Tube Extension Kit" and that video will show you how to adapt your weapon for the extension. When you are ready to hunt with the weapon simply put your hunting barrel back on, put one small drop of blue loc-tite on the mag tube threads and use the mag cap that came with the weapon and the four shot spring that came with it. It will stay on as long as you want to hunt with it.

You now have a multi-use weapon for $145.00

I ended up ordering the 18.5'' cylinder bore police barrel. I got it on gunbroker for $120 shipped. I think I will hold off on the extension for a bit, but will probably order one. Thanks for the great advice. I will definitely order the extension from aip. I wanted to get the barrel from him, but with Christmas had to use my credit card until next month.
