For my FF or LEO brothers who may have these lights.

I purchased and recieved the Terralux led upgrades for my Stinger and SL20X.
Very simple install for both and reasonably priced.

Made the stinger very bright. 220 lumen claimed with a two hour burn time.

The SL20X is about the same brightness. I have heard a shorter throw, but is a white light and if the advertised 6hr burn time is accurate is a real improvement.

I am testing the burn time now and will report back.

I purchased from this EBAY seller with very fast shipping.

Don't drop your light too much. I've had the upgrade for hte stinger for about a year now. 6mths ago one of the pins broke off the back, they replaced it under warranty. Then last night it was acting up so I took off the bezel to check out why, and the little dome glued on top of the led came off... It still works, but has more side throw then it did before. I'm going to shoot them an email and see about getting this oen replaced too... :-\ I'm getting kind of dissapointed... Granted I'm a clutz and drop my light as least twice a week, usually b/c I'm screwing around and throwing it around though ;-) so ymmv...

I have a terralux LED upgrade for my Stinger. Within a few months the dome on the LED came off. It took them several months to send me an upgrade after I called them about it. I had to send them many nasty e-mails to get them to finally send me one. The second one's beam is starting to degrade, and I fear the same thing is happening again. And I almost never drop my light. The LED light is bright, but not particularly durable. And their CS sucks donkey balls. I'll keep using this until it fails, but just keep the durability thing in the back of your mind.

01-01-2010, 15:05
Dang that sucks about the CS. I have one for my Stinger. So far so good. The factory Singer LED is hard to beat for their CS.. Had issues with mine and they rebuilt it to new no questions asked.

01-01-2010, 15:05
Also, didn't know they made a model for the SL. Good light. Love mine. May have to check that out.

01-01-2010, 16:16
I didnt' go through terralux so I can't comment on the customer service... however the first time mine broke I sent it to the guy I got it from "Monstertorch" http://monstertorch.com/ and I had a new one within a week...

I sent him an email today, I hope it's like last time and not an issue...

Thanks for the input. Sorry if I posted something that is not up to field use or may be late in posting. Our safety is #1 for me. I have been looking for a upgrade for the SL20 for a long time and I hoped it brought these lights out of retirement. As a FF my duty is not as tough as EDC carrry for COPS. I hope these lights work. I hate to see $300 (now $400 worth of light retired again.(

01-01-2010, 18:31
I think it'll definately bring the light out of retirement for you, at least for around the house or truck. I found these about this time last year and have since broken two upgrades...so I'm starting to wonder if my recommendation was premature, sorry guys :dunno:... it seemed solid when I got it...

This last failure though my light still works, I just lost that little glass dome that's attached to the LED itself.. I'm thinking that is Cree's fault since they are the manufacturer of the LED unit (all Terralux does is use Cree's led's in making the conversion).

Granted I throw my light around more than I should (sometimes when I'm bored I flip it around in my hand) as a result, my light prolly hits the ground more than most others too... I figure both my failures are due to numerous falls on the pavement (had it fall two different times from at least 10', was on a second level balcony)... and it worked right after I picked it up (just failed after a few more drops)... I think it's just the amount of shock mine gets (my bezel and tailcap are almost serrated from the chunks taken out of them)...

What I find weird though is I don't often hear about other led products having problems.. Granted this is just a small section of the entire customer base...

"I found these about this time last year "

Have I been living under a rock somewhere? I have been looking for upgrades for the SL20 forever! How did I miss it? Too much time on the porn channels I guess. I feel like $%*$ recomending something a year old and of poor quality:dunno:. I will try and bring myself into the current time, stay safe my brothers!

I never said it's poor quality... Everyone I've shown my light to has been uber impressed with the output (compared to a regular stinger). I just have had bad luck with it. I have two other co-workers who don't drop their lights and haven't had a problem with theirs (we all bought together last year). I would like to know how the sl-20 one compares though...

So I already got a reply back from Monstertorch... here it is...

"Joe – see reply below from our engineering director. I will send you a new unit out on Monday. Just send the old unit to – 4984 Waterport Way, Duluth, Ga. 30096. Thanks!

Please send Joe an email and tell he can glue the lens back on BUT we do not want any First Responder to have anything less that a perfect item that come from MONSTERTORCH. The lens should NEVER come off, therefore--- please send him a brand new Stinger upgrade ASAP. Ask him to him return the unit for analysis and thank him for his business with a BIG HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

'Hey there, about a year ago I purchased the stinger upgrade and about half a dozen of the 2xAA flashlights.

About six months ago I had to send back my stinger upgrade because it failed, and you replaced it under warranty. The pins on the back of the unit came off...

Well last night my upgrade started to flicker, so I took the bezel off my light to see what was going on. When I did so the bezel and plastic lens came apart, and then the little dome that sits on top of the led came off.

I put the bezel/lens back together and put it back on the light without the little dome, it still works however the light isn't as focused/bright now.

Is there a way I can repair this or is it still covered under warranty? It appears that the little dome would just glue on, but I don't know if they use a special glue or if it's more complex than that. If pictures would help I can send some.

So if any of you are considering an upgrade, but unsure if it's reliable... if you deal with Monstertorch I'm 2 for 2 as far as outstanding customer service (granted I shouldn't need it but I'm glad they're good).

I'm waiting for Terralux to release the new TLE-110S upgrade for the SL-20X. It's a 600 lumen LED that is dim-able and should be close to what you can get for the MagCharger.

Evidence of it can be found Here (http://www.terraluxcorp.com/terralux/Products/Portable/Upgrades/tabid/64/Default.aspx)

01-02-2010, 16:37
Here's another email I just got from them after sending them my address and asking them if they cared I posted on here about them...

"Also when your shipment comes back we will send you $2.00 for your postage expense. Just send it back first class mail – that’s the cheapest. As far as sharing your experiences that would be fabulous! Word of mouth is our best advertising! Most other dealers simply refer their customers back to Terralux but we always take care of warranty issues ourselves. We are in the process of updating our website to spotlight our new NiMH batteries for the Stinger series and MagCharger. Unfortunately we aren’t great tech types and it is pain to do the website but that’s the name of the game anymore. I hope you are receiving our I-flash letters and product notifications via e-mail. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

The battery for the stinger she's talking about will give about 6-7hrs with the 200 lumen upgrade (their claim)

They also have had these upgrades in the works since August (when I saw them in their newsletter)

1.)Ultra Stinger upgrade 180 Lumens with runtime of 8-10 hours
2.)Surefire 6P upgrade with 220 Lumens with multi-mode dimmable function
3.)700-800 lumen upgrade for Magcharger and Maglights with 3 stage Brightness levels for longer battery life
4.)Ultra-Monster NiMH Battery for SL20X and MagCharger, the MT-4500 6.0V, with 2-3 x runtimes of standard battery.

got my replacement stinger upgrade today. The original ones were a bezel just like the regular stinger, on this one they've included a rubber "anti-roll" ring which covers the top of the bezel, also acting as a cushion if you should drop it.... It's quite a bit bigger then it needs to be though...

Here's the pic comparing the stinger with the "anti-roll" ring to a regular stinger... it's easily removed as it's just a piece of rubber that slips over the top... it's a nice idea, I think just too bulky..

I didn't want to replace my SL-20X which I've had for fourteen years but was wanting to upgrade to an LED only bulb assembly. I contacted Malkoff and had them make me one. This sucker is bright. Almost too bright.

So you are saying that Malkoff built you a SL-20X LED assembly? If thats the case how much did it run you? Can you post pics of the LED assembly?

Malkoff was the first place that I looked for replacement bulbs.

I was out on a job Monday when my SL20x pooped out after about 15 minutes of use. That's no good. :steamed: I was about to can it for good when I stumbled upon the Terralux upgrade. Sadly I did not see this thread our I would have ordered from the vendor mentioned above. I also upgraded my battery to a 3500 mAh version.

I can't have my light crapping out in 15 minutes. I called Terralux and they said the LED will handle the additional amps. I also asked about the new 110s coming out. The guy on the phone said at least a comple more months. We all know what that means... :whistling:

Anyway, when the 600 lumen 110s is ready, I'm sure I can off load my 200 lumen upgrade. I'll try to update this thread after I've had the upgrade for a bit and let you know how it works in the field.

I have the Terralux Stinger upgrade and it's horrible: purplish, hazy beam (probably due to the optic used), and an unreliable mounting system.

I'd say stick with the incan and its proven reliablility.

You probably got one of the first ones? My first one was purplish... now mine's almost as white as the stinger led.. definately not purplish. I also noticed the focus got tighter and the clear "optic" part was more clear and appeared to be a better polish..

I have the Terralux LED conversion on my SL20. used it daily for about a year, works great.. very bright and the battery holds a charge much longer with the LED. No more dim light at the end of a long traffic accident.

04-27-2010, 14:32
Any word from Terralux on when this new upgrade is going to be available?

04-27-2010, 15:38
Here's something to think about: http://www.streamlight.com/news_let/09_q2/ub.html

Especially the drop test.

04-27-2010, 15:56
You guys use the SL20 to actually illuminate stuff?

Hmm well I can testify to the fact that I've dropped mine more than a meter several times and it still works.

Also compared to the regular stinger (I think their LED was just coming out) it was way better! Now they have their LED version so if someone wants to drop $100 on a new light they can. However for $30 you can still have a nice upgrade. I've had mine for about 1 1/2 yrs. now and would never go back to a regular stinger...

I have the C4 LED Streamlight Strion and that thing is as bright as the sun. I just upgraded my SL20-X using the Terralux 200 lumen LED. So far so good. It is way too soon to tell about durability. I did have to remove my dimmer tail cap for it to function correctly.

06-21-2010, 13:22
I called Terralux today and it looks like the 600 lumen upgrade is delayed until late July. :dunno:

06-21-2010, 21:40
I tried the Tettalux led "upgrade" on my stinger hp. I wasn't happy with the beam pattern at all. The pins broke shortly later after installing it. I was going to send it back for a new one but I hated the beam pattern so much I didn't.

06-21-2010, 21:45
Monstertorch.com has 600 lumens and a dimmer for the sl20x. Their web page isn't up to date so send an email or call them. The customer service is outstanding. Cost about $60. with the extra life battery and dimmer.

09-08-2010, 10:49
just got the 600 lumen sl20x LED and 4500mah battery from monstertorch. Looks good - goes together well, quality looks good, and way brighter.

09-08-2010, 19:38
Got mine in yesterday. Already blinded 2 badguys (oops) and myself once. Damn thing is bright! Love the dimming option. Haven't had problem with heat yet. Seems well crafted, doesn't look cheap like the 200 lumen version.

I hate to dredge up an old thread (well, actually, I do it all the time on various forums  ), but I was Googling around for info on TerraLUX upgrades, and here we are. I think the mention of and link to Monstertorch was definitely worth the trip, and a lot of the other info is helpful, too.

So it seems from reading the replies that somebody (maybe several people) here will know the difference between an SL20 and an SL20X. About all I can find out by Googling is that they use the same battery stick.
I have an SL20, no additional letters on the model number, that just might be older than some of the people reading this. Since TerraLUX only seems to know about the SL20X, can anyone tell me if one of the upgrades will fit my old SL20?

You guys use the SL20 to actually illuminate stuff?Y'mean as opposed to throwing it at the back window of a car to let the driver know you really want him/her to stop-right-now-right-there?
(I've never done that, and I'm not sure I'd ever try it, but it worked for the guy who was telling me about it umpty-something years ago. He was on foot patrol, and didn't have a hat like this one: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/Doug_C_Maine/Smileycons/Cop_Light.gif )

01-13-2012, 16:59
Streamlight is coming out with a SL-20L, which is the 20X with an LED. Probably be available shortly after SHOT.

01-13-2012, 16:59
I'm not too sure and a quick search couldn't find much except maybe the battery packs are different (which might affect use of an LED replacement depending on voltage). Maybe just call Streamlight and ask them the differences.

Here's a couple threads of interest though..

"Hi, I have been looking at the Streamlight family of lights, and in particular the SL-20 family. The older models used 1/2 D cells, and the newer ones seem to be based on 5 x sub C cells. The seem to be quite well made and potentially a good host for a multi LED host."

Here's the best price I found on the upgrade without using Monster torch... http://www.batteryjunction.com/alltepr.html#paging

01-13-2012, 18:45
I have been using the 200 lumen upgrade from Terra-Lux in my SL20X for the better part of a year. It is an amazing improvement. The light has functioned well in all conditions and temperatures for hours on end.

I know there are new 600 lumen upgrades and I've seen them. If find the 200 lumen upgrade more than enough light and you get amazing batterly life. I have failed to kill this light even after three hour traffic details.

I will be anxious to see Streamlight's LED product. IMHO they are way late to the table with a purpose built SL20X LED.

01-13-2012, 20:13
I may look to upgrade my SL-20X LED. I upgraded a Magcharger a couple of years ago but now it is starting to have some sort of issues where the LED cuts out and I have to move the bezel to get it to come on.

01-13-2012, 21:47
FWIW,I installed one of these led conversions in my Stinger and it lasted maybe 2 falls and Ka-Blooey no shiny! I read somewhere that you could put a Streamlight Strion bulb in a Stinger and increase the output substantially, so I tried it and WOW the throw is incredible! And the bulb has been pretty indestructable so far! I think 2 bulbs was like $7 and it really woke my Stinger up.:whistling:

01-14-2012, 03:38
The SL-20X/LED uses a sub C sized battery at 6Volts. The SL-20X uses a 1/2D sized battery, also rated at 6 Volts.

1/2D size cells are tough to find, but the packs are still sold by Maglite and Streamlight.

01-14-2012, 12:33
I have a terralux for my magcharger. It was/is a piece of crap. Fell apart in days with minor use. They refuse to answer my emails about a replacement.

01-14-2012, 13:15
I put the Terralux 600 lumen upgrade in my old SL20X. I just switched back to nights and have been using it on traffic stops. It is truly blinding.

01-14-2012, 13:26
I have had no issues with the Terralux upgrade in my Stinger.

FYI, those wanting to try the SL20x... here it is for $37.02 shipped.

01-16-2012, 12:07
Dammit Cochese, I had to look, and I had to spend.

01-16-2012, 12:09
It happens.

Mine is on the way.
