NCIS ammo question.

I was watching the all day NCIS marathon on USA today and wondered something – would the military’s criminal investigative units be limited to using only FMJ’s in their M11’s, or could they used JHP’s since they are not a front lines combat unit? Or, would the (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Geneva</st1:place></st1:City>??) convention also include such units in the non-JHP rulings? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Also, would military criminal investigative units have to go through the <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Federal</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceName>Law</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceName>Enforcement</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceName>Training</st1:PlaceName><st1:PlaceType>Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> (<st1:place><st1:City>Glynco</st1:City>, <st1:State>Va.</st1:State></st1:place>, right?), or would they receive training through their respective branches?

They are a civilian law-enforcement agency, and not bound by Geneva conventions.

IIRC the various military investigators are issued the Winchester 147JHP.

Well first I would like to correct a common mistake, it is not the Geneva convention that rules out the use of hollowpoints, it is the Hague convention. A lot of units in the military still carry jacketed hollowpoints due to their nature of business. A lot of hostage rescue type units are considered to be police units and are allowed to use jhp ammunition.

I think I read that NIS (now NCIS) in 1991 ran tests and chose the Federal 147 gr JHP. May have been some subsequent changes...governmental agencies usually go with low bidders who can provide supplies within their given specifications.
