I just bought a box of Winchester Supreme Elite in 45 auto. I noticed that there is what appears to be gravel substance around the primers. Anyone know what this is. This is supposed to be personal protection ammo, I am thinking that quality control would be tighter for this ammo.

Looks to me like the styrofoam tray is crumbling. Does the "gravel" brush off?

Some of it will brush off, but some is imbedded in there pretty good. The bullets are placed in the styrofoam primer up. So there is no contact with the primer end and the styrofoam.

It seems that it is only Winchester that does this. Nearly 20 years ago I remember buying all kinds of loads from the Winchester line and every now and then I'd find the particular problem that you describe. It's almost as if it's little pieces of tumbling media stuck between the wall of the primer pocket and the primer. And personally, I have absolutely no idea of what it really is.

Merkavaboy, have you ever had any reliability issues with this? I am considering using this ammo for my EDC carry piece.

It is from their cleaning media. There is no problem using it as carry or duty ammo.

No, I've never had any problems at all with Winchester ammo. I'm not a rifle shooter so I don't know if their rifle ammo ever had this problem. The ammo that I shot that had these particles around the primers were handgun loads in 9mm, 38Spl & 357 Mag in their Super-X line.

thanks for your help. I think I will shoot a couple of boxes to see how my gun likes this stuff. I no longer think it an issue.

Just received a box of 230g Ranger T's...same thing between the primers and casing. No problems with it though.

Same here. I bought WWB of .40 maybe a month ago, seems the concensous was that Winchester tumbles their rounds and it was remnants of tumbling media.

And it is Winchester signature, I believe.

Just bought a box of these for 28.99. Kinda pricey but its supposed to be the latest greatest. There was only one box left so I knew I had to grab it before it was gone. i noticed this crud around the primers too. im not sure I want this showering down into the inner workings of my 1911. I like to polish my SD ammo before i carry it any way so ill take a pick and scrape it out or a nylon brush. Not a great thing to have shipped out on top dollar ammo, winchester should probably fix this.

Can't wait to test it though. I expect it to expand nicely.
