Either way, I dig it! Anyone like Mini-14's?

01-11-2010, 19:50
NICE,....I used to have a few.
Got bitten by the AR bug, plan to get another,......SOON.

01-11-2010, 20:30
Personally, I'd save up and get an M1A if I wanted that style of action.

Either way that looks pretty "evil to me.

01-11-2010, 21:12
that there looks like one of them evil AKs

01-11-2010, 21:18
if the owner is EVIL does it make the rifle EVIL??? welcome to GT, took you a while :wavey:

That looks like my SR556's "redheaded step child" half brother by its cousin's brother's sister. They sure are cool little rifles. It looks nice.

01-11-2010, 23:45
It has "Black" and "Rifle" going for it. Not sure about the "evil" part... :tongueout:

01-12-2010, 00:35
Looks like our patrol rifle. Black composite stock Mini-14, but ours is the stainless LE and simple 2 point WW2 style sling. No fancy 3 point with mag pouch like yours.

01-12-2010, 00:35
I think it's evil enough with the black color and detachable mag. Take it out and OC it and see how many liberals you can make cry and wet their pants. If you get over 80% then it's an EBR for sure.

Tell that to the muzzle.:whistling:

Ranch Rifles aren't Evil.........

Unless it was an evil ranch, then the rifles on it are evil by definition. Now if you have a ranch of justice where the Super Friends lived, then the rifles on that ranch would be good. However, there can be only 1 ranch of justice and it's hidden so we'll probably never see those good rifles.

Ruger could never get their gas system right, Other than that they are a good 100yrd rifle...

Huh,.....the gas system on a Mini is MORE reliable than a AR15! :dunno:

The Mini's problem is the barrel diameter and throwing shots when
the barrel heated up. Shortening it to 16.1" and getting it Cryo
treated fixes that.

It's a baby killer alright! Evil as they come I tells ya! I almost bought one last year but went for a new hunting rifle instead. Lovin the black stock!

Without a pistol grip, I'd say it only rises to the level of an "irritable black rifle".

HA! That gets my vote for best response among all the good ones here...

Throw some desert paint on there and I just might have to take it from ya!
Nice rifle.

Ruger® Mini-14® Tactical Rifle Autoloading Rifle Model 5847 ( This rifle is a better model than the past ones with improved accuracy. From what I have been reading on this particular rifle, most say its an improvement. Yes, I also have one and have to agree from what I have experienced. Some who have "hatred"/"dislikes" for the past rifles will of course apply it to this one.

This was taken from one site test "...the barrel contour is indeed beefier than the original Mini-14. The 16.12-inch barrel features a 1-in-9-inch right-hand twist, which stabilizes most .223 loads quite well."

" My past grievance was that the Minis weren’t nearly as accurate as competitive designs. That apparently has been resolved."

"It looks like this re-born Mini-14 is ready to get up and run with the big dogs. This upgraded package should make the Mini-14 a viable contender for law enforcement applications in the years to come."

01-12-2010, 17:31
A few years back I was hooked on the Mini.
I had a Target model I sent out to have the barrel cut down to 16.5".
I placed it in a SCAR stock from Clyde Armory. That Mini would shoot
1" groupings @ 100m all day long!

01-12-2010, 20:17
Looks "bad ass" enough to me.

I have a Series 181 (with the fashionable wooden handguard) that has been a very good rifle. Plenty accurate if not running it really REALLY hard. I've shot a few three gun plate matches with it. It has the stock open sights. My oh my, with my old eyes those damn plates are TINY at 200 yards!

As others have mentioned, I've been bitten hard by the AR bug, but I know my son will inherit the Mini-14 when I cash in.

You done good!

01-12-2010, 22:15
Never owned a Mini-14 but had my Mini-30 for more than 20 years. Came with the nice wood stock that I promptly lost as soon as I put the Butler Creek folding stock on it. Never had any problems with it. Accuracy is whatever for a short 7.62x39mm carbine.

I like my mini 14. Fun to shoot and accurate enough for me.

01-13-2010, 02:36
No matter what else I get or build their will always be a special place for my mini 14.

01-13-2010, 05:26
ALL rifles are evil. Especially the ones with proprietary $40-50 mags. Look great though.

Ruger® Mini-14® Tactical Rifle Autoloading Rifle Model 5847 (

Can I be Tactical too?

01-13-2010, 15:46
Diane Feistein convinced me mine was evil so I kept it.

01-14-2010, 23:50
The AC-556 used by the A-Team cannot be evil as they are the forces of good, and besides, that was in the happy early 80s where guns were liked, even in CA.

01-14-2010, 23:51
Bluto and Human, do you guys live together? Your pics show a very similar style... as well as flooring pattern.

01-15-2010, 06:15
Part of the Mini's appeal is that it doesn't look like EBR

01-15-2010, 08:38
It was so innocuous that CA didn't sweep it all into it's final solution of the 2000 Assault Weapons Ban Bill where it required all EBRs to be registered. There was some debate about it and the AG issued an opinion that Ruger Ranch rifles did not fall under the requirements.

Nice rifle. I can very close to buying the Mini-14 tactical but ended up with a RRA NM4 as I decided to use it for competition. That Mini felt so good though, and I still think about getting one.

01-15-2010, 16:41
This is a NRA model, before the last election, I wanted to get some kind of rifle and the Mini 14 NRA model is what I was looking for, now you can get the same gun without the NRA logo for cheaper.

That "Irritable black rifle" comment cracked me up:rofl:.

01-15-2010, 17:48
I had one about 20 yrs ago.....looked great, functioned like crap. SS model it was.

Bought it because of the nod to the Garand, Carbine and M14 but it never found a permanent place with me for a myriad of reasons.

I hear they are improved today but I've no need for one...ARs only.

id like to get one just to have my rifle's little brother :)

the accustrut actually makes it look closer to the M14

01-15-2010, 21:56
The older ones were notorious for their lack of QC but I hear the new ones are night and day.

No just me and the dogs. Bluto does have nice floors.

Oh God yes!! Thats scary evil, being black and all, magazine hanging out.....Got sick, twisted, mofo writen all over it:supergrin:

01-16-2010, 09:14
You can make it more evil... there are so many things you can do to corrupt that rifle.

JK my old friend.. welcome aboard. Looks good.

01-16-2010, 13:14

The A-Team never killed anything. Except George Peppard's career.

01-16-2010, 13:30
Mid 80s I bought three SS minis..

#1 was a minute of pie plate shotgun. I traded it away

#2 was 1 MOA with iron sights and factory SS109.. it got a hard mounted scope and has less than 400 rds so far, a safe queen. Yes when it heats up it will walk..

#3 is my daily truck gun/home defense urban rifle.. it does about 3 MOA

Both of my keepers have the Choate M16 style flash suppressor, which helps with barrel harmonics, better sight picture and of course flash suppression. Also Choate folding stocks. I am planning to turn #3 into the "Urban Brawler" style in the future, maybe with the 16 inch fluted barrel:

Use Thermolds if you can find them, great mags and cheap, too. Another great mag is The John Masons in blue or nickel. Minis are very mag-sensitive, and a lot of owners have given up on theirs simply because they were using crappy mags. Also, I always install the AC556 recoil springs..

01-16-2010, 14:52
LOVEEEEE mini-14's!!! Great choice.

01-17-2010, 17:04
No just me and the dogs. Bluto does have nice floors.

And if you look close you can see what my dog's done the nice floor.
