I played with how the light switch is mounted and this works best for me since I am using the off set T1 in most situations where a light is needed. I also love the magpul rail covers.

Homemade blizzard covers for my Z6i. Ugly as sin but works.

Ditto here. They all clicked in place except for one portion of the DD Omega rail where the two halves stubbornly refused to click together, the rail, not the covers, was the problem; in desperation, I took a Vise-Grip and gently forced them together that way.

Count me in as another fan of Magpul's rail covers.

Pat, have you used Larue's index clips? I hear they are also pretty nice to own.

And some very nice looking rifles across the board Gents!

I need some to go on my newly aquired Troy. Thinking ladders for the top though.

I'd put em all the way around. Why would you just put ladders on top when you might have to grab the handguard at an off-angle?

I put them all the way around as well. I am doing my Colt up in Forest Green and my DDm4 up in Dark earth I will post pics when I get all the parts in.

I got some of the XTM snap-on covers on mine as well but only for the partial covering. For a full length cover on a whole section that is unused, I went with the Falcon low profile santoprene cover which doesn't really cover as much as ut a layer of soft rubber in between the rail valleys so the edges are protected and your hand gets better purchase.

Nice looking ARs.

I like the XTMs too. Usually dremel out a groove to fit around the QD hole. I put 'em all the way around 'cause depending on what I'm doing I grab it different, plus it looks neat. I mount an offset light on the top rail behind the front sight.

Here's mine, you can see the other rail with the low profile Falcon Santoprene rail covers that have rungs that go inside the T-cross sections and does not cover the raised sections but creates rubber bumps by filling in the cross sections. Gives a good grabbing surface anyway and protects the rail edges.

I like the XTMs too. Thinking about getting some in foliage green.

To each their own, but heat rises and covers on top block that dissipation.

I knew there was a reason I put ladders on the top rails.

I just didn't realize that that was the reason. Thanks!

LOL. That's the idea. What do you think is going to happen to the heat if the covers are there?? I'll tell you what's NOT going to happen to your hands. They're NOT going to get burned! :poke:

I don't plan on putting my hand on top too often... but that's why I have a VFG and side rail ladders.

Take some training where you shoot from atypical positions and you'll see why it's important to be able to grab your rifle from any position, such as laying on your side pushing the rifle out in front of you. You'll find yourself wrapping you hand around the side or top of the handguard and wishing that you had rail covers all the way around it.

I guess in the end, it probably isn't a huge deal if you don't, but I don't see why you wouldn't put em all the way around. More area to possibly grab in a SHTF situation is a good thing. Less area is a bad thing. At least, IMO. Just my $0.02.

I know, I have seen all the vids and "The Art of the Carbine". The AR-15 is my personal gun... I get all my useless training on an agency Mini-14. Rails? The only rails are next to the academy where the train runs through.
