Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has Bobtailed a fullsize 1911. Thinking of Bobtailing an EB SF 5". I can save $100 over the carry version and get arguably better reliability and performance without giving up much in conceal-ability.
What do you think? Here are some examples with some stunning photography. They look better than I thought they would. Thanks

If you are going to carry it it makes sense. The only purpose of the bobtail is to allow you to conceal the butt. A 5" 1911 carries just as easily as a 3" as the slide is covered by your pants.

The Bobtail is a neat, innovative idea for carry that does help with concealment, but it isn't for everyone. I'd even go so far as to say that the more time someone has shooting standard full frame 1911s the more problematic the bobtail can be.

The reason is it makes the gun point differently. If you ever do force on force training you pick up pretty quickly on the importance of point shooting.
What I found with the bobtail is the gun points lower than I am accustomed to because the meat of my palm doesn't contact the MSH the same way and hold the bobtailed 1911 at the same angle as a standard full frame 1911.

Here is a simple dry fire drill that you can do to test how the bobtail points for you. Get a target in front of you, 7 yards or so will do, close your eyes then draw and point in on the target. Now open your eyes and see where the gun is actually pointing. Do it a few times and check your results.

When I do this both dry and live fire I consistently shoot low. So for me to get a bobtail for carry I would have to make the larger commitment of making all of my carry 1911s bobtailed and then do all of my serious training with them.

That would make it much easier to carry. If you like the way it feels go for it. My commander is bobtailed but I like magwells on my full size guns so no bobs there.

I have a full sized Colt in .38 Super getting worked by a smith right now. Part of the pkg. is to bobtail it. The other BT pistols I currently own are 4" barreled Wilsons (Professional and Professional Supergrade). I don't have any issue with the BT and prefer it when carrying.

A bobtail makes it even more easy to carry a full size 1911. And I wont carry anything less than a 5 inch 1911 due to the fact the 5 inch seems the most reliable.

Nice, yes I'm really warming up to the idea and the Bobtail fits my medium hands perfectly.
