I have a rather old 500A that I keep at my cabin for emergencies, I put a folding pistol grip stock on it the other day. I Love it.

Anyway, I want to put some night sights on it. There is no rail tapped on the rifle for me to mount anything, just a small gold bead up front that unscrews out.

I really don't want to spend the $$ on a gunsmith to install a rail, glass/sights, etc. I invested too much into my Saiga project. He may charge me more than what the gun is worth. I have no idea. I remember a company that made a big sight up front for shottys, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This might fix you up just fine. Mossberg uses the 5-40 version...

Sweet. It's better than what I have. I thought there was a bigger one out there though..

Checkout the XS Big Dot front bead night sight also.

+1. That's what I have on my mossy and it's great. You will have to file down the threads a bit and loc-tite it in with the red stuff. Had it come loose using the blue. :wavey:

DrtyHarry,
Can you post pics when you get it installed? I may want to get this sight for my 500 as well.

If your 500 has the bead with the hexagonal base like mine, that base is too large to fit up inside the XS sight and allow it to sit on the barrel. The instructions will tell you to drill and tap the barrel for a new bead without the hex base. Not having easy access to beads or taps, I filed the base to a smaller diameter, used JB Weld to fill the hole and cover the bottom of the XS sight and installed it over the brass bead. Then I wrapped it with a rubber band and cleaned the excess JB squeeze-out off with a q-tip and let it set. Finally, I used a rounded needle file to eliminated the burr of the brass bead's threaded shank protruding slightly into the barrel. The results are great. Be sure to degrease all contact surfaces with alcohol first.

It's the one on the left:

Ugh, mine has that hex base on the bead. I guess I'll have to try badkarmaiii's method. Thanks.

Harry,
It's not as bad as it sounds. I filed mine in-situ and scratched the barrel bluing a little before I got smart and masked around it. No worries, can't see the scratches from a shooting hold anyway! You might try removing it to file it and reinstall with pliers. Don't worry about boogering-up the bead 'cause you'll never see it again once the XS is installed. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Lee

badkarmaiii, again...thanks for the advice! If by chance you happen to have a close up shot, I'd love to see it. Again, thanks for the help!

Alternatively, one can use a Dremel to enlarge the plastic XS BigDot inlet hole until it fits over the hex nut to contact the barrel. Clean and set as did Badkarmaii.

I used the XS Big Dot but followed the directions, and it was quite a project. I had to order a bunch of crap from Brownell's to do it too. In hindsight, I'd probably do what other people are suggesting and just dremel down the factory bead. I had to drill and tap the barrel for a 6-48 Remington bead, install a new #6 bead with blue loctite and then dremeled the post that was now protruding down into the barrel. I scratched the hell outta the inside of the barrel, so I ended up touching that up with a Bluing pen. Then I JB-Welded the XS Big Dot sight over the bead.

Sure was a lot of work for something that was just going to be covered up in the end!

Here's my front sight. Used JB Weld to install it.

Anytime.
You can see the line of JB Weld around the base. I forgot to mention that once I put it on, I wrapped it with a stiff rubber band then used a q-tip to clean off the sqeezeout. I wanted no chance of it coming loose.

Thanks,
Lee
