Where is the best place on an AK to mount an optic.

Fore end rail
top cover rail
frame attach rail

Which will hold a zero and return to zero the best?

Either a side mount rail that attaches to the side mount, or an Ultimak gas tube replacement.

All have plusses and minuses - your call.

Fore end - Eye relief issues and forward weight. Many rail option though. Some are expensive, others not so much: Quad from UTG (+ cheap / - bolt it down), ultimak (+cowitness / - heat), krebs or other quad rails (+ quality / - expensive)

Reciever cover - There are some that bolt pretty sturdy, but overall I do not recommend these, and you'll take it off constantly to clean, and they are generally less than sturdy.

Side rail - the intended method. + It works, - No irons when using these, - can't fold to the left when using optics. + even a cheap quick release returns to zero pretty well if kept tight.

I use both front mounted and side rails on different guns. Are you planning on taking this thing on and off a lot?
