Right now it's 28 degrees, to cold to play outside unless you're a penguin... or a young'un who has yet to experience the pleasures of an aging body rebelling against physical indiscretions of times past.

With a fire blazing in the wood stove, a steaming cup of 'holiday peppermint' mint coffee and Dawg playing with one of her dozens of chew toys it would be the perfect time for some 'indoor activities'. Alas, a slump in the female companionship arena of life, a slump which seems to becoming a norm rather than an aberration, (:crying: I really need a woman), leaves but one option. Cast up a bushel of bullets!

Over the last day or so I've created three thousand cute little 121 grain RN for a .38 training load I'm developing for the grandson. Today it's time for some big boy bullets. A thousand or so each of 200 grain SWC and 225 grain RN. (The G30 prefers a diet of RN, has something to do high cholesterol or triglycerides or some such medical malady... I'm not really sure.)

As we speak, well, not really 'we', and not really 'speak'... more accurately, as I type, the furnace is plugged in and warming up, transforming well traveled wheel weights into 20 pounds of glistening molten lead. (For the less informed Newbs in the group it is often referred to as the 'Nectar of the Gods', well, after Dewars scotch of course.)

The NFL pre-game starts in twenty minutes and immediately after that the Jets/Colts game followed by the Vikings/Saints game. (If NASCAR were on I wouldn't even be concerned about the lack of a woman. Well, except for the possibility of a little action during the commercials of course.)

Not being a purchaser of commercially cast bullets I don't really have an accurate estimate of how much four or five thousand cast bullets would have cost me but given the recent savings in the Viagra budget coupled with the bullet savings I suspect I could cover the cost of a new gun... or a trip to the Bunny Ranch in Nevada. Decisions, decisions... life doesn't get any easier.

Be it bullets cast by your own hand or delivered by the big brown truck I wish you happy and safe shooting.

(Any Heather Locklear look-a-like nymphomaniac ladies out there who want to learn how to cast? Hey, if you don't ask, you don't get.)

Right On
For some, it is the only source of heat. Had to shut off the furnace to conserve LP so we could smelt and cast.
Priorities Dontcha know.

And I don't mean of Heather. I know what she looks like. I can conjure up that vision because of Spin City pretty easily.

For me it was a good day to by a new Washing Machine. What fun.

I can cast and watch TV at the same time because Colorado has this little thing called, ELECTRICITY... unlike Indiana that still relies on oxen and mule power.

BTW... how are the goats? :whistling:

Just taking a little break before the next playoff game. I hope Favre wins... I always root for the old guy. I can't seem to figure that out. :dunno:

C4W... I'll take some pictures either later tonight or tomorrow... depends on my Metamucil effectiveness.

If your wife knew how shabbily you treat your elders you'd be sleeping with the goats.

Naw... they'd kick your butt out too... there are some things even a goat won't do. :whistling:

My old guy lost... at least he didn't have a heart attack, or break a hip.

How about a picture of Heather casting and lubing bullets? I'm sure there are plenty of those floating around.

Hey now, Everything is Beautiful, in its own way.......you just have to find it. There has to be a pound of china lead in those, um...things.

Before I found my specs I thought someone had a serious tinsel accident.

I'm waiting on pics as well, of the boolits and casting equipment. Since I started loading cast that has been sitting on shelves for years I have an interest in making the boolits now, especially since I have lots of salt water lead weights and tons of 50 cal muzzleloader bullets my father will never use again. He used to cast those years ago. Pics please.

Okay, okay... just got home from doctor appointments and the pharmacy... my little sweetie there wants my body. She may not realize it, but I'm convinced she does.

I'll go take some pictures and get 'em on here in a little while.

BK63... Take those 50 cal round balls, or minnie balls, down to your range and sell 'em to the smoke pole shooters. They're worth a lot more that way than melting 'em down. a 100 count box of Hornady 50 cal round balls sells for right at $9 to $12, depending on where you buy 'em.

Also be aware that if your dad cast 'em right they're pure lead... you're going to have to mix 'em with WW's or add some tin and antimony to bring it up to proper hardness.

As many of you already know, our little Colorado buddy, C4W, (Steve) is agonizing over whether to start casting or not. (Apparently his master...er, wife, has no qualms when it comes to making a decision on a new washing machine and old Steve happily obliges... but, I digress.)

I spent yesterday, during the playoff games doing a little casting and have taken some requested pictures. Between being distracted by the games, especially the second one, a visit from the kids and grandkids and a visit from one of my horse boarders the actual time spent to produce what's pictured was around five hours.

Pay attention C4W, I used some of my limited life expectancy to take these just for you.

The large pile is 225 grain RN out of a 4 cavity Lyman mould. The plastic container in the foreground is filled with the same bullets that I sized and lubed during a break from casting. The two containers in the back are 121 grain RN out of another 4 cavity Lyman mould.

Yes, I cast indoors... always have. I currently use an RCBS Pro Melt 20# electric pot. This one is at least 18 years old. They pretty much last forever, I haven't even replaced the thermostat in this one yet. I have also used a Lyman bottom pour and a Lee bottom pour. I shall let each of you decide the pros and cons of the different furnaces.
http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss114/GioaJack/IMG_4231.jpg?t=1264472576

I store my bulk cast bullets, sized or unsized, in Tupperware type containers but keep a supply of different caliber and weights in Arco bins so I can just grab a bin and set it next to a press.

You still paying attention C4W, I'm missing an HBO movie because of you.

I keep the moulds I use most often sitting in an aluminum baking pan next to the furnace. Because there's no humidity up here there's no need to oil the moulds between casting sessions. Just set 'em on the warming shelf of the furnace for a few minutes then start casting.
http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss114/GioaJack/IMG_4232.jpg?t=1264473426

Some of my other moulds... when I need to use them it only takes a minute or so to attach the handles.
http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss114/GioaJack/IMG_4234.jpg?t=1264473907

Many mango seasons ago when you bought a Lyman 4 cavity mould it came with handles. This one is a 148 grain bevel base wadcutter. Yes, I have a couple Lee moulds... never really got use to them. I prefer iron moulds... doesn't mean they're better, just what I'm use to.
http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss114/GioaJack/IMG_4233.jpg?t=1264474212

Okay C4W, you can go back to sleep now.

Jack thanks for the pics. I am pretty interested in this whole casting thing. I just can't seem to take the plunge. I gota read a little more. You make it sound pretty easy. I think you are going to cost me some money here!!!! Well the wife will be happy, as I will spending more time in the "reloading room".

My casting bench is the tailgate of my pickup covered with aquired white towels of the type typically found in hotels...

I back the truck up to the entrance of the garage so I am covered overhead but outside at the same time. I open the windows on the truck so I can listen to my angry, right-wing, knee-jerk, reactionary, white male talk radio while I cast.

Wisky... it's said that necessity is the mother of invention, and I take that to heart. Since my back won't support me when trying to sit up I've adapted to that little inconvenience by resting my forearms on the edge of the bench while casting. I sit in a high breakfast bar type chair so it's a pretty natural position for me.

During the entire casting process I have at least one forearm leaning against the bench, usually my left arm since I hold the mould in my left hand.

The thing that slows me down the most is not being able to sit at long stretches so my normal routine is to take a break every time the pot gets down to around 1/4 full... I take a break while waiting for the new lead to melt.

Wow, great pictures. Thanks. How deep is that bench? It looks like it's about 36" or so.

Steve... I have 4 benches and they're all the same size, approx. 40 inches high and 33 inches deep. No rhyme or reason... just seems to work for me.

I cast outside today it was 19 degree, I'm not as fortunate as Jack I cant cast in the house.
In the last week I've casted enough boolets to keep me shooting for a while and some for trading with my shooting buddy's. :whistling:

800+ 401 155gn HPs
1,000+ 401 175 gn TC
1,600+ 358 151 gn RN
2,100+ 452 200 gn SWC

All the lead I have was free, and I get some free wheel weights although I have paid $25 for a 5 gal bucket it's normally $20 a bucket.
It works out to less then 12 cents a lb for all the alloy I have on hand.
Just tryin to push Steve off the fence :whistling:

Better yet, go up and visit with bob2223's wife... she does the actual casting while Bob is busy making a soufflé or getting a pedicure.

Don't forget to try his 'goat fricassee'... I hear it's to die for... or is that 'die from? Now I'm confused. :dunno:

There's a company down here called "Super Sod", I giggle every time I see one of their trucks. Nothing like a little brazhoot (di Parma), super sod, Locatelli, bread and some home made wine. I don't care if there's some goat in there or not.

No problem... I need to get a bit more lead and been thinking about some 40 and 45 moulds. I'm leaning towards the Lee tumble lube moulds....just cause they're cheaper and supposedly you can get away without sizing the boolits. Any truth to that?

When I get a chance to cast I'll post some pics......of the boolits....not of me.
I really do appreciate the furnace and will be putting it to some good use(not a flower pot).
Also on a unrelated note the place we met last time...Its kinda close to a buddy of mine(D.M. Bullard Leather). He does holster work and been wrote up in a couple of the gun rags and stuff. He also does some shooting out there. Next time your in town out that way maybe we can set up some trigger time. Prolly won't happen soon but maybe this summer or in the fall. Just keep it in your head.

Would have loved to meet for some shooting... was supposed to be in Florida this week for business in Orlando then back up to Ft. Worth for a week there. So much for well laid plans... the heavy haul business is off so much I got laid off 2 weeks ago as did my counter-part who did all the auctions on the west coast. Bummer... it was a perfect retirement job.

Not gonna lie down and give up... there are still too many people out there who need to be pissed off and hit with a nightstick. I'll hook up with some company eventually.

Used to take some time when I was in the Big D area and shoot at that range right off I-20 and exit 442B, I think it is. That's where I stopped for breakfast last summer and they broke into my truck and tore out the navigation system. Missed all the guns though.
