View Full Version : Real lowdown on side rail optic mounts
I am interested in the experienced answers to this question. I have a Kalinka guick-detach side rail mounted optic rail. In true reality, how well will the sights return to zero after taking it off and putting it back on again? Can we try to be specific, because I was thinking of getting a second rail and mounting a regular scope on it. Then swapping as and if needed. If they don't come back to zero, that is a useless endeavor as is the QD mount theoretically.
Thanks in advance for any learned tested experienced answers and opinions too.
It has been my experience that if the side mount locks securely to the side rail of a rifle, it is more a function of the scope or sight as to whether zero is maintained.
The two side mounts that I use are shown below. In the first, picture the KOBRA maintains its zero regardless of how many times it is mounted/dismounted.
In the second picture, the side mount (I use the one on the left) locks on securely each time and so far, the M4 clone that I use has also kept its zero through the mountings and dismounting that it has gone through.
The M4 clone that I use can be seen at: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=142&t=620067&page=1
P.S. Your tag line is a great site for people who like animals to visit.
That is good news as I use the 02 lowmount. What do you think of the idea of having a separate mounted 4-6X scope or something like that as a backup for more precise long range shooting?
Some how my tagline is giving the wrong impression. Links to a forum for pet lovers dogs, cats, snakes, amphibians, small mammals, horses and it has a neat photography section. Just published the first magazine on the story of John Travis and his animal adoption and fostering facilities. He's great on 1911's also.
Use a separate scope sounds like a workable plan.
If you want to stay somewhat authentic, check out the scopes available from http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstpso.html. Once the page comes in, just scroll down to see the selection of scopes offered.
TANTAL is also a reliable dealer.
Thank you Sir,
I'll give them a look. Do you know anything about that millett DPMS scope, I think its 1.5 X 4. Wonder if that would cover both sides? Although I doubt it has the field of view at the lowest setting.
Millett scopes have a good reputation but I have had no personal experience with them
Thanks for the response. It seems that the scopes on Tantal are all set up for the 7.62X54R cartridge. Will continue looking, thanks again.
