Anyone check out the comparison tool on Winchesters website?
http://www.winchester.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/flash-SWFs/law_bullit.swf

It looks to me that the 9mm performs as good if not better than the 40 cal through Denim and heavy cloth. It expands just as well and sometimes more and doesn't over penetrate where the 40 cal might. Is my assessment correct?

Also I am not saying that the 9mm is a better self defense round. It just looks like if you use Winchester Bonded Rangers, it may be. Keep in mind I am by far no expert in what is/isn't a good defense round.

The 40, and 9mm are very close in performance.

if you were the bad guy, which round would you rather get hit with?

If I were wearing a jean jacket and jeans I would rather get hit with the 40cal since it wouldn't expand as much (less damage) and probably will pass right through me :)
Test results don't lie. :tongueout:

For S/D I will stick with the .40.

Does that slight bit of more expansion if it even expands at all mean whoever takes a round center mass will be more dead with the 9mm than the .40 ?

...all I see is that the 45acp delivers better expansion and more consistent penetration to ideal penetration depths in all 4 tests.

Long live the 45ACP for down jackets. Florida Highway Patrol is going to the GAP because it is a chic clothing outlet.

those numbers doesnt even make sense, a 230gr .45acp @905 FPS penetrated 15.2" of wallboard, while another 230gr of same bullet @990 FPS penetrated only 13.8" of wallboard.

bottomline is... the only real testing media, is a human body....

Go with the T-series vs bonded.

If you can shoot quickly and accurately the .40 has nothing to offer over the 9mm.

If you can't shoot quickly and accurately you should just run away.

Howdy,

The 40, and 9mm are very close in performance.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Gee, if a 9mm is as powerful as a .40S&W, then why does the 40cal have so much more recoil than the 9mm?

The .40 obviously delivers more power to the target.

The problem is it doesn't deliver enough more to matter.

Does the 9mm deliver enough more than a 380 to matter?

You know what it really comes down to is being proficient with your firearm. A well placed 9mm shot will do just as much damage as a well placed .40 shot. They are very close by the looks of those tests. Some guys like 9mm, some guys like .40. To each their own... I myself would rather own a 9mm than a .40 for home defense/ just all around shooting. I only have one gun and I think it being a 9mm is the best of both worlds. I can go out and shoot all day and not break the bank, and I can defend my home and feel comfortable that my well placed shots will be very affective in stopping a BG.

The 9mm meets my minimum standard for penetration and expansion and the .380 falls short.

I'm not sure how that consititutes a double standard.

Care to explain?

Does the 9mm deliver enough more than a 380 to matter?

I like this...

Does the 380 deliver enough more than the .22 to matter?

Does the .22 deliver enough more than the pellet to matter?

Does the pellet deliver enough more than the marble hurled via slingshot to matter?

Does the marble deliver enough more than the stiff admonishment to matter?

Does the stiff admonishment deliver enough more than the guilt trip administered by a Nun to matter?

That 15.2" one didn't expand as much, hence more penetration? Just goes to show the variation that can occur shot to shot even with the same ammo. All these tests do is give ball park figures. But that's still valid and useful.
