you don't need a sniper rifle if you have an automatic.

For a "counter sniper" rifle I like the AR-10 as one of the most precise, more readily, available autoloaders. Easy to put optics on top of. Also easier to get a great trigger for it. Some of the heavy barreled free floated barrels are first rate.

I have a fine M1a. It's rugged and accurate. Much harder to get that way however than the AR-10. For the M1a you'll need a synthetic stock, match trigger and a good mount and optics. The M1a is hell on scopes and ammunition too. Tough to get many reloads thru an M1a.

You might have a better response to this in the ‘black rifle’ forum.
As a short answer: M1A or AR-10.
Optics: Leupold

What's the intended purpose? Are you actually a sniper by duty position? Or do you just want an accurate semi-auto? Is this a department purchase or an individual purchase?

My advice to this point is to cut your budget in half. Half for the rifle, and the other half for glass. Too many fancy bolt guns with crappy optics...being operated by untrained shooters.

What I want is a an accurate and reliable long distance semiautomatic rifle with a good scope.

Cost? $10,000 ish.

Scope: Hensoldt ZF 6x42 PSG1 scope with an illuminated reticle. The scope has a built-in range adjustment feature which can be adjusted from 100 to 600 m.

The LWRC REPR is pretty macho, but the cost is north of $3k. If you don't want to spend the money, then the Springfield A1 line are solid shooters. For the less "tacticool" route, take a look at the Remington R-25 and Winchester SX-AR. Both are chambered in .308 and both are excellent shooters (and both are around $1100).

For the glass, I'm a big fan of Leupold. If you're a purist and want a fixed power scope, their FX-II line is fantastic. They're extremely durable and reliable (the advantage of a fixie). If you want a variable, then the Rifleman line is the most affordable and the Mark 4 is the top of the line. The amount of variability is totally dependent on you and the ranges you'll be firing. Some guys use a 25x for 1000+ meter engagements. Some guys use that for 300m engagements. Be honest about what you like to shoot (and how much target you want to see in the glass) and buy it. Don't let someone else tell you how much power you want out of your scope.

Good luck and tell us what you decide to do.

i personally prefer the M14 platform but the AR10 style is easier to make more accurate. id build a LRB M25 with a kreiger heavy barrel and put it in a JAE chasis stock. zero maintenance and sub MOA accuracy. that build would cost about the same as a Super MAtch from Sprinfield and the M25 from LRB has an integrated scope mount so that takes that away from the list of worries.

i would also recommend either Leupold or IOR Valdada optics

+1000 to Jedburg. Much more detail would be needed to give a truly helpful answer. But check out this site:

You say that like it's a bad thing.

eta: few gamers would attempt to compete in .308 or 30-06

I had a Rock River LAR-8 with a heavy varmint barrel and a Nikon Monarch scope.

Nicely accurate out of the box with factory 168gr ammo.

Shot quarter-sized groups the first time I shot it, and got better from there.

Jedburgh:

Thanks your advise is closer of what I have in mind.

There is something else I forgot to mention, I want a rifle that can be VERY EASY TO field strip AND WITHOUT ANY TOOLS.

Seems like there are a few low IQ types on this thread, bad-mouthing others for no good reason!

Any .308 semi-auto sniper rifle that functions 100% and is < 1 MOA accurate is suitable. I've always been amazed at the old-time bolt-action sniper rifle fad. Yes they are a tad more accurate, but so what? 1/2 MOA vs 1 MOA makes only 0.25" difference in point of impact at 100Y and only 1.5" difference at 600Y.

I'm also not convinced that the typical 10x sniper scope is "best" for the job. A 1-5, 3-9 or 4-12 with lighted reticle would be preferrable since it could also be utilized up close for fast action shooting where a 10x can't. This is especially important in combat situations.

Basically, any AR-15 style target grade rifle (or similar) in .308 with a picatinny rail and appropriate Leupold scope would be fine.

As for scopes, I think I'd rather have a 1x-5x with lighted reticle, since it would be the "best all-around effective" choice. It would be as fast as a Red Dot up close, and accurate out to 600Y or more at 5x.

It should be noted that in WWII, NAZI and Russian snipers were highly effecvtive with 2.5x and 3x scopes!
