I am going to try using Mobil 1 to lubricate my handguns. What weight would be the best and why? Thanks

Really doesn't matter. Heavier weight will run less. I run 80/90 gear oil.

yep, folks been doing it for years...keeps you from spending money on weapons oil since, when you change your oil in the car you usually have some left over...

I don't even want to think about what he uses on his weapon. But in this case I believe he's referring to his guns...... :whistling:

If you have Mobil 1 left over from changing the oil in your car, thats great. I can't believe that Mobil 1 provides an advantage over regular ol' dinosaur oil for firearms use. The demands placed on oil in an engine compared to oil that lubricates a firearm aren't even in the same solar system.

EDIT: Heavier weight, 40 or 50, is what i use.

A good dino oil is as good as synthetic except for heat. Around 250-300F the synthetic has an advantage. If you are wearing an oven mitt to shoot you want synthetic, otherwise motor oil is better than most lubricating oils.

I use synthetic motor oil in vehicles exclusively and preach its benefits to anyone who asks. The only time I use conventional is to break in an engine. I firmly believe synthetic is superior to petroleum base in every way.
I have never used it on weapons but it seems like a great idea. I have read about home brew gun lubes in the past and ATF was a common theme. It seems like a good idea since it it high in detergents. I think a little heavy grease mixed in may help.
Synthetic stays where you put it in minute quantities so the metal is always protected but for maximum slickness I think higher viscosity would help keep a thicker film. A little moly grease or white lithium mixed in may help that.
I dont think there is a bad synthetic out there but Royal Purple has proven to be a tad better than the others in my opinion.
There is some high dollar petroleum based oils out there that claim many things. I dont think the best petroleum base can hold a candle to the cheapest synthetic.

I would ordinarily just advise using some milspec oil....CLP, etc, but I'll just talk total craziness by saying anything is probably better than nothing. Let's face it, you can run a Glock dry as a bone for many many rounds.

If you're just doing range work, heavier weight would seem intuitively better. If you're carrying, the lighter the better...less goo to slow the works with.

I have experienced sluggish cycling with CLP at sub-freezing, so I'd say a full synthetic sounds great.

I just started using BREAK-FREE LP (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25945/Product/BREAK_FREE_LP). It is heavier than most other oils I have tried and does not run all over the place. Dicks sporting goods also carries it.

Just make sure to use the High Mileage blend if your gun has shot over 75,000 rounds...:rofl:

Not just heat, don't forget cold. At really cold temps (like -20f) dyno oil is almost worthless it gets so thick. Not that too many people need to worry about that here on thier handguns. I read that one of the advantages that the Russians had in Stalingrad was that they would mix some gasoline in thier gun oil to thin it out in the winter, reducing the issues they would have with thier 91/30s in the extreme cold. From my experience using Synthetic oils up here in the frigid north, I would say a synthetic would be even better.

This is what I found from a quick search on Google. Opinions are all over the place, "Who would'a Thunk!"

Most gun oils are just regular machine/motor oils with off-the-shelf additive packs (just like those oils), packaged in tiny quantities with the word "gun" on the bottle and a 500% markup. After trying a bunch of specialty gun oils for years (mostly Rem Oil and Hoppes Elite), I've found something that lubricates better, fights corrosion just as well, doesn't evaporate as easily, and is way cheaper.

2. Flash Point (F/P): The lowest temperature (in degrees F) at which the lubricant will produce vapors that, if subjected to an ignition source, will ignite and combust.
Minimum requirement: +450 F

3. Viscosity at 100 F (V/100): The viscosity (in centistokes) of the lubricant at 100 F.
Minimum requirement: 40.00 cSt

4. Viscosity at 212 F (V/212): The viscosity of the lubricant (in centistokes) at 212 F.
Minimum requirement: 8.00 cSt

As a point of reference, the kinematic viscosity of pure water at:
68 F (room temperature) is 1.004 cSt
100 F is 0.658 cSt
212 F is 0.294 cSt

5. Transient Operating Range (TOR): The sum of the absolute values of the Pour Point (P/P) and the Flash Point (F/P).
Minimum requirement: 500 F

6. Viscosity Index (VI): An arbitrary numerical value assigned to a lubricant indicating its ability to retain its viscosity across a specified temperature range.
Minimum requirement: 110 (Very High)
