Hello;

Maybe .260 or the Creedmore round (I think it's 6.5 creedmore). The 260 is more available, the Creedmore is just coming out.

All can be had in the AR system.

The 6.8 SFC has a good following. Quite a few major manufactures(Stag, Rock River, Bushmaster,Wilson/etc) and a host of custom manufactures are on board with it also. Check out the 6.8 forums. (http://www.68forums.com/forums/index.php)

didnt think the 6.8 was designed as a long range caliber, just as one to have more power than the 5.56? maybe im wrong

Both.

The trajectory of the 6.8m SPC hangs right in there with the .308 for the first several hundred yards. A .308 is flatter at 500 yards and beyond.

If you really are skilled enough to shoot accurately beyond 450 yards of so, under field conditions of unknown range and wind, then the 6.5mm Grendel will serve you marginally better than 6.8mm SPC.

However, I chose the 6.8mm SPC (Stag Model 7 Hunter) for my hunting of feral dogs from point-blank range out to about 300 yards or so, which is the longest distance shot I am likely to get -- or want to take -- on my deer lands. (It handily takes whitetail at those ranges too.) I really like the terminal ballistics of the round, especially with Nosler AccuBond bullets.

I'd prefer the 6.5mm Grendel over the 6.8mm SPC only if I were shooting exclusively beyond 350 yards.

The 6.8mm SPC shoots flat enough and hits hard enough for any shot at game that I would feel competent enough to take under field conditions. Bench shooting at paper over known, long ranges probably does favor the 6.5mm Grendel.

The choice depends on you intended use.

Once you step up from the AR-15 to an AR-10, traditional hunting and target rounds like .243, .260, and .308 become available....

The new fad at all of the gun shows down here now is a 5.7 upper (although that's not exactly long range).

maybe a BOHICA upper in .50BMG for true long range?

Why not build a bolt rifle if long range is your goal? I built an AR10 in .308 and while I dig it it ultimately wasn't the best for the job so I ended up building a bolt anyway. That's the way to go if you want to run with the big dogs in the precision arena.

If you don't like that answer, want to buy an AR10?

I have been very impressed with my 6.5 Grendel. Sub-half minute accuracy with handloads, and negligible increase in recoil.

plinking ammo is way cheaper than 6.8spc too.

the 6.8spc may have close to the same trajectory as the 308 and Grendel, but the grendel owns the 6.8 in the wind drift dept.

I did a 2 part article on the 6.5 Grendel here

What about the .458 SOCOM?

Not sure how it performs long range, but it is a new caliber option for the AR15 platform.
