Just picked up this baby today.

This is their top of the line polished blue "Eagle" model.

S.A.M. makes their slides and Frames in the Philippines and then its fitted with Iver Johnson small parts, much like STI does with Armscor for their Spartan model. I'm not sure where IJ sources the small parts, but they don't look like anything overly familiar to me.

Anyway, I'm impressed with the fitting of the parts and the nice finish on this 1911. The trigger is heavier than it should be, IMO, but for $600 its not bad. The other IJ models are less expensive.

Mine is at the top of the page in the link.

The serrations are odd, in that they don't share the grip angle, but, hey, I like unique things like that sometimes. ;)

Here are some pics. Enjoy and please tell me what you think.

I do think its weird to have "Eagle" on the slide and then a picture of an owl on the opposite side and on the grips. However, the owl has always been Iver Johnson's logo, even with the old company. I actually like the way the logo looks on the grips and I like the grips in general.

As soon as some of this snow melts, I'll take a range trip. I'm curious how its going to do. All my Filipino 1911s thus far have been great.

Better, or worse than the Taurus PT1911? hehe

If its worse, I'll probably shoot myself with it.

That is a great looking 1911 for $600, cant wait to hear how it shoots. What do you think Bac, should I go with the Springer GI, or try and pickup an Iver Johnson GI. Does the IJ have made in Philippines under the dust cover? I really like those grips, the owl head is done very well and is a nice departure from other logos.

I called up Iver Johnson and ordered a set of the GI grips, they are a little different than the Eagle, not as "polished" looking. I actually think I will go with the SA GI, and pickup the IJ Hawk, normally I hate FCS and Beaver tails, but that Hawk looks good, and I have really been looking at the Commander size for CCW. Bac did you have you local gunshop order that for you? I called up mine and they want MSRP for the GI, I would like to try and get it a little cheaper.

Thanks.

I like the grips quite a bit too from the logo to the color and tone of the wood.

All the dust cover says underneath is "SAM Philippines", not "Made in the Philippines". SAM stands for Shooter's Arms Manufacturing and they also build 1911s under that name. However, the small parts look nothing like what's on my Iver Johnson, so that leads me to believe IJ either assembles them separately or supplies small parts to SAM to build them. That's what STI does with Armscor for their Spartan model.

As much as I'd like to tell you to try something new, the Springfield GI is tried and true. I experiment with this new stuff because I already have the others. ;)

That said, if you feel like saving some money and taking a chance with IJ, go for it. As I said, I like mine so far, but haven't shot it yet.

That sounds like a good idea. Get the tried and true Springfield and pick up an Iver Johnson Hawk on the side.

When I talked to IJ they said SAM assembles them from their parts, and because they are assembled in the Philippines they must put SAM Philippines on the dust cover, it is allot more subtle than the RIA stamp though.

Well there you go.

I guess I was right. :tongueout:

Seriously, thanks for finding out. It all makes sense now.

The frame and slide are made by SAM, IJ supplies the small parts, and they're assembled by SAM. Sounds good to me.

That's the exact same thing STI does with the Spartan, but they work with Armscor, not SAM.

You could flip burgers with that slide stop. Looks like the Philipino folks are making the "cheaper" 1911 market more competetive.

Yeah, I don't care much for those shelf-like slide stops. My Firestorm DLX has the same style.

Not crazy about the rollmarks on that. Other than that though, looks like a pretty good 1911 for the price. Let us know how it performs.

With the exception of the huge slide stop that Firestorm (or American Classic) is what I am looking for in a truck gun. Also considering a Citadel I know this is off subject but which would you go with the Firestorm or Citadel (Charles Daly EFS)?

Both have been perfectly reliable so far, but I have more rounds through the EFS, so I have to vote that way.

Hardwick is 30 minutes from my house BTW.

Nooo.

No Caspian frame here.

The frame is made in the Philippines by SAM.

Its just stamped with Iver Johnson's name.

BAC1023, Am new to this site but what a quality looking 1911. IMO, the finish is great (at least from the pic). In real life is it better than the Spartan? Thank goodness IJ didn't follow STI's lettering font on the slide. Am enjoying reading and learning from a bunch of guys who like the best of the old (1911's) and new (Glock)world.
Are you really going for 1,911? On your way there, its hoped you continue to post your latest acquisitions.
Am looking forward to your range impressions. Congrats again and happy shooting!:wavey:
BTW, your DW Valor is my dream gun!!!

Thanks for the informative post!
It gives me something to show the owner of the shop where I work on the weekends. We have been trying to get ACII pistols from our distributor but as we are a small shop, all the "big guys"are getting the best deals.
After reading IJ's website,it seems they will sell direct to the dealer without the wholesaler getting to "allocate"who gets what,

So your post will help some 1911 fans here in Cincinnati have a "shot"at getting a nice inexpensive 1911!

Regards,

I can't comment on how the gun is vs the Spartan, because I haven't shot it. The finish is certainly a great deal nicer, but I doubt it will perform as well. The Spartan is actually a very smooth shooter, with great sights, and a nice trigger. I don't feel anything in its price range performs as well as the Spartan, but we'll see.

As for the Valor, its a very nice 1911 in every way.

While at university I worked in a gun room. At that time "Owl Heads" were the subject of much derision. It's clear that the new Iver Johnson has very little in common with the old Iver Johnson.

Nice pistol.

As a grim aside: It was an Iver Johnson Model 55A Cadet with which Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
