Added: If we were doing a poll I think beavertail and sights would win out.

What do you guys think is the best custom development of the 1911? Just a fun topic to get us to think.

Here are a few things I thought of as examples.

Ambi safety?
Ed Brown's Bobtail?
Maybe Memory groove safety?
High ride beaver tail?
G-10 grips?
Rogers "Bobnose"?...just saw this for the first time this week, really dig it.
Bull barrel?

You can answer this anyway you like (Looks, function, ease of carry, etc.)

For me I have to vote for either the ambi safety or the bobtail for fit and function (being left handed and all). But I REALLY like the "bobnose" that Chuck does too.

I would have to say the beavertail.

Hex-head grip screws.

In all seriousness I think the hex head grip screws are an excellent improvement that is overlooked. And just about everyone uses them now. So it's a big improvement that's stuck.

I'll go along with the beavertail. I really like not bleeding.

If we are going with custom additions to modern guns that already had a beavertail then a nice magwell.

Probably one of my favorites. Or the Commander itself.

Target sights followed by match barrels.
The rest I could live without.

Best improvement over the 'original'?

-sights you can actually see! GI sights were/are tiny.

As for the cosmetic stuff, I don't see much value in most of it.

High profile combat sights... a dramatic improvement over the original 1911 and even the later 1911A1 version.

Beavertail to stop bleeding.
Memory bump to help when shooting close and fast with gloves.
Ambi safety for fellow lefties.
Easy to see sights.
Non GI barrel ramps.

Everything else is optional.

:) Actually, the pupose of my hyperbole image was to illustrate that with all the added modern doo-dads and gizmos, the gun would lose its identity.

I'm in the process of ordering a Colt O1918 and the only external change will be better sights.

Beavertail is pretty important but I think good sights would come in first for me.
