I just ordered a Savage model 10 FCP-K law enforcement rifle chambered in .308W.
My question is.
Can I use 7.62 x 51 Nato in this Savage rifle chambered in .308W ?

The .308 Winchester is the commercial version of the military 7.62x51mm NATO centerfire cartridge. While the specifications are not identical, they are safely interchangeable.

I have a nice WWII era Springfield M-1 that was rebarreled by Deans Gun Restorations in .308 Winchester. I have fired South African, Australian, Radway Green, Lake City, German (don't remember the headstamp) and Portuguese surplus 7.62mm with complete and perfect function and excellent on target accuracy. I have also fired these rounds in a Remington 700 VS-SF in .308 Winchester. There were no problems experienced or observed. HTH. Sincerely. Brucev.

It is my understanding that you can use 7.62 Nato in a rifle chambered in .308W but you shouldn't use .308W in a rifle chambered in 7.62 Nato like my Armalite AR10.
Any thoughts on this?

Yes you can. The 150 or 147gr. fmj loading is not the most accurate for the Savage 10. At least it isn't in mine.

The Savage 10 is a match grade rifle. To get the best performance use good match grade ammo and you won't be disappointed. Black Hills has some good commercial stuff. My favorite loads are all handloads around the smk 168 or the Nosler 175.

I will tell you this, I own a Ruger M77 .308 and have fired a good 100 rounds of military surplus 7.62 ammo through it. I notice the ammo is a little hotter than standard PMC or Winchester ammo. A little more recoil, not as accurate, and sticks a action up a little. Its higher pressure so it makes the locking lugs stick a little.

In short I would not buy more, not too impressed.
