Making Custom Knives

Ok I'll dive in and be the first to ask :)

Mr. Emerson,

I started collecting knives about two years ago. While I've managed to acquire an odd assortment of different types, including bayonets, I really like the higher quality custom knives I've seen. But I can't afford to spend upwards of $300.00 or more on a knife.

So I'm giving serious thought to making my own custom knives. I doubt I can make the quality of knives that I see for $300 and up (at least not at first) but I'd like to give it a try.

My question then is what is the best way to learn how to make custom knives?

Dear UtahIrishman,

I recommend 4 things.

1. Go to a knife show - ask questions, look at everything.
2. Find a knifemaker in your area and make friends with him.
3. Buy these books -

The Wonder of Knifemaking by Goddard

How To Make Folding Knives - A Step-By Step How-To by Lake, Centofante, and Clay.

The Tactical Folding Knife by Bob Terzuola

4. Subscribe to Blade Magazine.

And prepare to join in a craft that dates back to the stone age and one of man's oldest professions.

Thanks for the tips Mr. Emerson. I'll check out those books and subscribing to Blade.

Don't know any knife makers but I'm sure there are some in this area. And I always like shows so I'll be looking for the next knife show in this area.
