View Full Version : New BHP: Expoxy or Blued?
So I'm ready to get me a Mark III. I wanted to get some opinions regarding the finishes. My brother in law got a new one that's blued. It's already driving him crazy with fingerprints. I have always preferred park'd. I'm ready to get the BHP with the epoxy finish, I just wanted to get some feedback regarding the durability of the epoxy finish.

My 1995 MkIII has the matte finish. It's been a constant carry gun all these years with many thousands of rounds down range.
Aside from some minor holster wear, it looks like the day I bought it.
It's very durable for normal use.

My gunsmith had a hard time removing that finish, he said it was real tough.
EDITED: Opps, that might have given the wrong impression. I had some work done on my MKIII, and it needed to be refinished. My 'smith said he had to remove that original finish first, and that it was difficult.
Cool, thanks for the replies. I had ordered it Sunday, I just have never had any experience with a epoxy finish, so I didn't know what to expect from it. I think bluing is beautiful, and my BIL's is real nice, but I hate fingerprints too and would rather spend time shooting it than wiping it down. I had my blued '91 Gov't park'd for that reason. Can't wait to get my Mark III.
You have to go with bluing on a Hi-Power.

The bluing on those are beautiful. The bluing on my bro in laws HP definitely put the bluing on my '91 to shame. I will get a blued HP at some point. I really wanted a shooter at this point so I that's why I went with the epoxy.

Blue's fine, so is Park, FN epoxy and a myriad of other finishes and coatings for actual use and carrying.

My HP's get carried so I stay away from the blued ones. Owned one and while the bluing was very pretty, it didn't hold up to totin' duty well at all. And it's not like I haven't owned other blued pistols, or fail to take care of them. It's just that the bluing on that particular Browning went to hell in a hurry. Had to send it off for a Duracoat job, only time that has happened to me.
Fortunately with subsequent HP purchases I've been able to find epoxy, epoxy/hardchome, or hardchrome used ones in very good shape at good prices.
So if I ever get another blued one it will have to available on the cheap.
And don't get me started on that digi-camo variant...it may or may not be durable but even my low level of aesthetic appreciation is violated by that rascal!

The bluing is beautiful, but the epoxy will be easyier to take care of.
