View Full Version : How do you carry your spare mags?
Many people mention that their AK is their SHTF rifle.
We are assuming that the SHTF has hit enough for you to dig out the rifle.
And I think it is safely to assume that you would want more than one mag.
And I think we can safely assume that you would want to carry other stuff, not just ammo.
So how are you going to carry your spare mags, ammo, and other stuff if the SHTF?
BTW, ARs have it so easy. They have all this nice molle gear. You can get pouches for 1-3-5 mags.

Chinese five-pocket shoulder bag from Cheaper Than Dirt for around $10.
That's easy, my shtf rig for my AK is a Polish KS-12 vest specifically designed for use with AK's. It'll carry up to 12 mags which is waaaay to heavy for me so mine has 8, plus it has plenty of pockets for other stuff. Mine has a flashlight, small 1st aid kit, some fire starting, space blanket and a few other odds and ends. I also have 2, 6 mag pouches from Ace for a less intense look. Here's a pic of the KS-12 with my shtf AK:

Let me kill this thread, I think I have my answer.
And there is another thread on this subject already running.
I have a UTG Level III Assault Pack from CheaperThanDirt, packed with some other survival goodies, and some mags, all ready to go. When I carry my AK, I don't carry any extra mags usually. My AK's my brush gun.
Weesatch plate carrier.

you look like a psycho when youre wearing that on the range so I bought this and it holds more than just my AK mags..

a) Cargo pockets - 4 mags easy
b) Maxpedition Jumbo - 4 more easy
c) AceCase 6 mag bag - 6, obviously
For SHTF - I doubt I'd need one. But I could have 14. Getting kinda heavy though...

The OP's question was SHTF related, not range related.

For range time, I have a small bag for range mags. I believe it was a tool bag I picked up at a hardware store. So I have a range setup.
Although I crutched it in a SHTF, it is about training and tromping through the woods 99.999% of the time. For my AR, I have some molle gear. For AK, I didn't think I had anything that would work. As it turns out, I found something that will work. But it is slow.

What'd ya find that works RW?
Ya know surplus chicom mag pouches are cheap so that's always an option if you are looking for something cheap, but they are slow so I generally just use them for range work.
My Weesatch is a lot faster but it's also pretty hot & bulky (it is a plate carrier after all) & a bit more expensive, but for SHTF it's what I'll be wearing, especially considering that I wear it while training and am very familiar with it.
Also if you want to speed up your SHTF reloads you can always use Magpul magazine pulls, they are a tad expensive for small pieces of molded rubber but they cut reload times down significantly, I personally think they are worth it.

I have a pre-molle vest.
I found that one of my multi-mag pouches will work with AK mags. It holds less AK mags than AR mags, but it will work. My only concern is that I have to use 2 fingers to pull out the first mag, if I am using 30s. I assume 40s, would be make life easier.
I don't think Magpul makes anything for the AK?
I could make a my own pulls, but I think the 40s will do better.

I've seen the Magpul 7.62 (M14 and G3) pulls installed on AK mags with no problems.

Does that shoulder bag have a means to secure to your waist somehow? I'd hate to be running around and have a 5-mags pouch flopping around.
