I seen on the Kvar website where it is stated that the stainless steel heat shield is optional for that handguard design. I looked at the same handguard I am holding in my hand and can't seem to figure how if I take the heat shield off it will stay locked into position because to me it appears that the heat shield presses against the barrel and keeps the handguard from moving upward when it is locked inside the handguard retainer, but I am comparing this on a non-bulgarian/non-sgl gun. Therefore, it's hard to see how its optional because without it what is keeping the handguard from sliding up?
Maybe someone with an sgl rifle or a bulgarian rifle with the same setup can shed some insight on how this might be possible. My only consideration on how it might be theoretically possible is by the use of a retainer with a slot opening for the handguard steel tabs at the front, but I have yet to see a retainer with such slots built on to it.

Maybe Carlos will answer. I have the guns but know very little.

Give me a few minutes...I have not had the chance to look at my SGL yet.

I only have the Bulgarian ones. The heat shield seems to be part of the hand guard in some way. I know they sell the US-made ones separately but I don't think the Bulgarian ones are designed to be separated. I haven't tried to take them apart though.

Okay...sorry for the delay.

The heat shield and the tabs you see that keep the handguard from moving up are two separate pieces. In fact, you can push the heat shield back and forth while the steel tabs won't move. You can even remove the heat shield and the lower handguard will still secure to the retainer and won't move up and down.
The SGL uses a slightly different handguard retainer than other AKs. Put it next to another AK and you'll see what I mean. Look in particular at the release lever on the retainer. On other AKs, the area next to the release lever is open, so you can look down at the top of the lower handguard. On the SGLs however, they folded over a steel lip on each side.
Let's suppose you removed the heatshield from the lower. You can put another AKM's lower handguard on the SGL, but you can't put the SGL's lower (minus the heatshield) on another AKM without it flopping around.

So the heat shield on your sgl is not contacting the barrel directly?

The steel tabs held by the curved top lip seems like a designed accuracy enhancement that eliminates any potential shifts in pressure points.
This is a vast improvement compared to a traditional direct contact handguard that can increase or decrease pressure against the front
depending on where a hand/rest is positioned on the handguard and this
would cause a change of bullet impact location. This is definitely one more reason to love the sgl legions.

No it isn't and it shouldn't. If it's touching the barrel, then it's acting like a heat sink and not a heat shield. It needs to reflect the heat away from the grip, not transfer it.

When I tried it on my Vector ARMS SA 85, the heat shield was keeping the handguard in place and apparently became a heat sink. Now I sort of have the handguard and no gun to correctly use it on. I might need to find an SGL
and keep the handguard as a spare. Thanks for checking your sgl and advising about this.

I can finally see it in action. Thanks Carlos
