I just purchased my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 Persuader. It's a tactical model, that came with an adjustable stock, 5-shell side saddle, and pistol grip. It was $429 before taxes. As soon as I find a good deal on a digital camera, I'll post better pics. Oh yeah, can anyone tell me how to open the barrel so I can load more than 2 shells?

Remove your barrel.

Jiggle the gun and attached mag tube around a little until the wooden dowel rod inside falls out.

Presto. Instant correct capacity.

yeah. I had to do that for mine. You could also remove the barrel and load a couple shells until you see the stick out the top...

Yea, you REALLY need a new camera....

The rattling method always worked for me.

Alright, I was able to take the barrel off and get the stick out. I showed my wife how to load, unload, and work the safety. Five shells are in the magazine tube, five are in the side saddle, and five are in box nearby. Now, I feel a lot better about her being at home with the kids whenever I'm not there. I took the pics with my cellphone and since I purchased the G-27, 15-22, and 12 guage, plus ammo and accessories, that are in the pics all in the past week, I have to find a digital camera that fits into my budget.

Spark, that's an excellent shotgun. One of many guns I regret trading off is a 500 combo that I bought new in 1989 or so. It was reliable, robust, and shot to POA.

If you are seriously concerned about your wife being capable with it, I stongly encourage you to provide some live-fire training with the 500. Anyone trying out a shotgun for the first time in a serious situation for the first time is going to be hard pressed to be more than minimally effective with it. That said, I'd take one shotgun blast over a single pistol shot, if that's all I'm going to get in.

Thanks Ferdinandd, either this weekend or some time next week, I'll be taking her to the range to do some live fire pratice. I just wanted to get her acclimated to it until we could get to the range. Thankfully, she got over her hesitation to even hold it and after a bit of coaching, she felt very comfortable with it. Even to the point where it seemed like she was going to claim it as being hers!
