Like many folks, I was tempted by the recent $350 AK-74 deal from CFS. I actually ordered one early on (the first morning it was available, when they had 300 or so on hand), and then when I finally found out it didn't have a chrome-lined barrel, I refused delivery so the rifle was sent back.

But I really had the bug to get an AK-74, so when I spotted the below deal for $395, I jumped on it.

Before I ordered though, I tried to get as much information about the rifle as I could. In particular I was concerned about the barrel. But all SOG would say is: Stamped Nodak Spud receiver, "bright and shiny" barrels, came from TGI, bayonet lug welded so it can't be used, and rifle is "as pictured on the website" (plum stocks with salmon PG). I was told there was no hand pick, as these were all in "like new" condition.

This was all encouraging information (except for the welded bayo lug), and I was about to order, but I decided to call TGI first to see if I could get some additional info (especially about the barrel), since it came from them. Not much to be had there. Talked a a newish guy there named Greg, who didn't know anything about this rifle, but he asked some woman there who did remember this particular TGI AK-74 Bulgy plum model being sold a while back, and for $395 she told Greg to tell me to "jump on it."

All of this was very encouraging, so I decided to roll the dice on this one and see what would end up getting delivered. This was on Tuesday the 16th. The rifle was delivered on Friday the 19th.

Well, I have to tell you I was very pleasantly surprised. In looking the rifle over at the gun shop, it looked just as pictured on the SOG website, nice plum hand guards and stock with a salmon PG, rifling looks bright, sharp and clean (and it does look chrome lined), internals all look great, there is a small tack weld (looks like silver solder) on the muzzle brake, great finish overall with very few minor imperfections -- basically it looks like a brand new rifle inside and out.

Also, the bayo lug is not welded, sights are not canted, numbers match, rivets look very good, and it has the cleaning rod. Came with a 30-round Promag, which does wobble a bit. We'll see how better magazines fit. What are some really good steel commie magazines I could get?

Obviously now I have to see how it shoots.

The front trunnion has the number 10 surrounded by a double circle. Does this mean it's made in Bulgaria? Also, the serial number begins with AE. I thought is was supposed to be a country code, but I don't know what AE might stand for. Would someone know?

This is a really clean build. Did TGI make these, or perhaps some other contractor? I'm curious... Does anyone have any other information to share about this AK-74?

Also, as soon as I got home from picking it up, I ordered another one. They only had 3 or 4 left when I ordered my second one. I don't know if they're getting more.

The rifle was supposed to come with a soft tactical case, but instead it came in a DoskoSport hard case. For a rifle in this condition, how could I complain? I kind of like the hard case anyway...

Looks great. Good price considering the Arsenals are going for $700+

Wow, that's a good deal as long as everything is kosher. And don't worry about the brake being tac welded on. One minute with a Dremel would fix that.
