Most folks thought it was too "light" for big bears. For sure, nothing for anything "dangerous"...
So, why more popular than the 30-06>?:dunno:
Load it up with 180 gr. Nosler Partitions or else some of the more recently developed bonded bullets and it will be find for big bears. The biggest factor in killing any game is bullet placement and penetration. The .300 Win. can run a 180 or even a 200 gr. bullet fast enough to produce a good flat shooting load out beyond 200 yds. Very few hunters are even capable of making reliable hits at that range. Spend some time shooting your rifle to get a good solid zero at 200 yds. Then practice actually shooting from field positions. You will not find anything up to and including "anything 'dangerous'" that you will not be able to take effectively with your .300 Win. As to it being more popular that the .30-06, what is the basis of that statement. In terms of numbers of rifles sold, quantity of ammo sold, popularity measured by the number of reloading dies sold, etc., it would be hard to make the case that the .30-06 is not one of if not the most popular of all rifle rounds. I am not sure where the .300 Win. might come in such a listing.

Much the same reason people choose the 357sig over the 9mm - same projectile with more speed behind it - despite what some may say that speed can make alot of difference.
Out to longer ranges itll retain more power be more accurate, its a great long range cateridge - youve got the versatility of all .30 cal projectiles whilst retaining better velocities than the 30-06 and the .308 - its reasonably common theres really not alot to dislike, the recoil can become a bit much once youve shot alot in sucession but overall its not so bad.
I think youd find the 06 and 308 would be more common overall so if you were going to be travelling alot theyed be a better travelling gun.

That's a beautiful rifle.
I think the .300 winmag is everything you'd want if you like 'o6 and .308 but wish for better performance with 180gr+ bullets.

Ditto. The .300 Win Mag will work just fine for brown bear and moose, and has taken many deer.

Many of the reasons have been pointed out, but one other reason people like it is the fact you get about 10 feet less drop at a thousand yards vs. a .308.
And I would wholeheartedly disagree that it is more popular than the .30-06. Were you talking in general, or for dangerous game / bears?

It's NOT more popular than the 06. The 300winmag is an 06 100yds further out. There isn't much reason to go 300winmag unless you ARE going to use heavy for caliber bullets for heavy game or soft skin DG like bears IMO. The 200gr bullets @ any range are going to hit harder than 150-180gr bullets. The 06 does fine w/ those bullet wts to 300yds, then the 300winmag takes over.

The .300WM extends the effective range of the .30 caliber projectile in conventional weights from 800m, out to 11-1200m, in the role of a sniper rifle (compared to .308). It bucks wind a lot better at these distances as well, due to its shorter flight time. Also, the trajectory is flatter. The list of attributes goes on.
