Computer not producing any sound

I've got a Dell Optiplex GX620 that will not produce any sound. There are a nice set of external speakers hooked up to it and I verified that they work perfectly - I plugged them into my laptop & they work fine.

I uninstalled & reinstalled the drivers multiple times, no dice. Anything I'm missing?

or should I go with a more traditional PCI interface?

Any experience with those USB devices?

I bought the two that are listed on the 'frequently bought together' section of the link you provided.

They actually work quite well. I needed one to help a friend with a burned out onboard sound card in his desktop. I kept one for myself, and really only bought two because the price was so low.

The devices are great for skype calls, and for use on my HP netbook that has a 'combined' headphone/mic jack. It will show up as a USB sound card in XP/Vista/Win7, and even Ubuntu.

Under the Control Panel, go to Sound. There may be more than one audio device (i.e. Onboard and SoundCard). Make sure the default is set to the one into which the speakers are plugged.

Thanks, I played with those settings several times, checked and re-checked. There is only one default audio device listed.
