Do you mean damage to your house?

Is it your home or are you an uninvited guest??? :whistling:

At typical home defense distances a HIT of 00 Buck from a 12 gauge will be the most devastating then one round from anything else. It does not mean that a single round from any of the others would not be fatal.

Misses all score the same.

Scattergun, with enough distance to get a 4"-6" spread and nothing else comes close unless the discussion goes into some rifles that would rank very impractical for these intents and purposes...

it doesn't get any deader than dead.

True, I wouldn't feel under prepared with anything on that list given correct ammo selection...

Ill agree with the 1st two,but as far as 100 to 500 yards you can keep the .22(3).Ill stick with a .30 russian or a .30 NATO round.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

It's not fair to compare a pistol and longarm rounds

Multiple hits with one pull of the trigger...C'mon its pretty clear here which is most devastating. Heck even if it uses a 1 ounce hollow point slug...its probably still the most devastating firearm inside of 100yards? (compared to the 3 pistol calibers mentioned)

12 gauge, 2 00 Buck shot has 9 pellets .33 in diameter. Can you imagine what that would do if you were to hit someone center mass at a distance of 20 to 25 feet during a home invasion?

Guys, OP says nothing about being on the defensive side...

If I was planning on doing home invasions, I guess the shotty would do the most damage BUT it doesn't conceal well. You could cut down a double barrel, but now you are facing NFA violations along with any charges that come as a result of the home invasion itself. Not good.

.223 is too big and will get jammed on window frames while you are invading. I'd stick with the pistols. If you hear sirens, throw the weapon on the roof of the house next door. You've just taken an armed robbery down to simple burglary, maybe trespassing depending on how crafty you are.

So, for me, small auto pistols, any caliber, are what I would use for a home invasion.

Thank you. I wouldn't have said that nearly as politely. Probably would have said something like "maybe if your home is being invaded by prairie dogs at 400 yards out..." or other rude but true things.

you better read this again. I am not planning on doing a home invasion. I am talking about protecting myself from a home invasion.

It was a joke guys. I guess not a good one lol.

Which on will do the most damage on a home invasion. 12 gauge shotgun , 9mm , 45 , 40 , 223.

Original post could have been taken the other way, so that was the basis of my post, I'm not really condoning home invasion...

Well he didn't say anything about any other rifle rounds so .223 is the only choice I got for long range defense. I agree with you both on a certain level. The .223 is designed to fragment, when it does that then it's no poodle shooter. When it doesn't, well then it is a poodle shooter.
You guy's are stuck on the age old caliber wars or something.

Not to mention that this whole thread is utterly incompetent, the guy posted the same question in the three or more different parts of the GT...

Oh, ok that makes sense now. It was hard to tell over the internet that it was a joke? We are calling off the black helicopters and the entry team right now lol.

Very similar in size to 1 bullet from a 9mm FMJ round :p

I think a lot of paint chips perhaps were consumed in childhood. Look at post history.

They all have their place.

- G22 is my bedside gun
- 12 gauge pump next to be
- AR15 with plenty of mags if stuff gets hairy.

I personally trust slugs and .223 over .40, BUT the handgun has its obvious advantages like one handed operation and use in tight quarters.

This link would answer a very large percentage of caliber / gun choice questions on GT:
