hiya gt. planning on buying a 12ga shotgun this weekend. have it narrowed down to the rem 870 express or a benelli nova. any advice? looked at them both today, kinda leaning towards the nova, weighs nothing and takes all sizes of shells. had a mossberg 500 years ago but sold that. looking to spend under $400. can i still upgrade the sights and all that jazz on both? thanks.

I have a 870 and it runs great I don't have experience with the Nova. If you think you will want to tinker with it and make customizations the 870 parts and options compared to the Nova is probably night and day.

I went with the Benelli SuperNova Tactical since I wanted a 12 gauge pump for mostly home defense/SHTF type duty. (not a hunter) It had all the features I liked like the 3 lug rotating bolt head, mag stop button, jumbo safety forward of the trigger, chrome lined barrel & chamber, built in sling studs, polymer armored reciever, comfort tech stock, and the ghost ring sights...all for $450. A little pricey but its a gun that will last a lifetime and its just nice to own a Benelli shotgun lol.

I have owned both Remingtons & Mossbergs and now I am ready treat myself to a nice Benelli for just an extra $100 over what the Remington with GRS sells for.

If you plan on ever swapping out the stock, I'd pass on the Nova since the stock is built into the reciever and cannot be removed. Thats why they made the SuperNova.

Both great guns. More accessories for the Rem. The Nova is more weather resistant and can fire 3.5" shells if that matters to you. Either will serve you well.

I have the above mentioned 870. Great gun for under $370. Any questions or accessories needed contact aippi at http://www.aiptactical.com/

I shot a Nova, it was a decent gun, but there just is so much more available for the 870.

If you are happy with the way the Nova comes and don't want to modify it then it can be a good choice. If accessory availability has any place in your decision making process the 870 is tops, followed by the Mossberg 500.

i did a little more research, and found that the scottsdale gun club offers a Nova tactical (basically the nova with grs) for $399. looks very similar to what mix posted above. of course, also found a mossberg 500 tactical for $300 delivered. maybe i should quit looking and flip a coin? one of my closest friends swears by his 870, he recommended that. i appreciate the weight of the nova, i think its only about 7lbs. its also easy on the eyes. a pistol grip isnt important to me at all, but i would like a sling, but, i suppose that can be put on any shotgun. hell, maybe i should just go into the man for a bit and get all 3!

I just purchased a 870 25077 and love it. I added a sling and a knoxx stock and am waiting for the ups as we speak to get my tacstar 6 shell holder for it, great gun i paid 307.00 for mine and i see them around here sometimes for 299.99 on sale. After adding all my accesories i will have a total of $491.00 in it which isnt to bad for the gun an all accesories.

I recently upgraded to a Benelli Nova for a Turkey Gun. I chose the 28 in barrel model. So far it has shot good, is a breeze to disassemble and clean, and handled all size loads very well, even the cheap winchester target loads while clay shooting. I paid 400 for mine, so you may have to budget a little more for accessories if you choose the nova. I also own an 870 which has been a relaible gun also. Either is a great choice

Main downsides to the Nova:
Stock & receiver are a single unit, you cannot change stocks...at all.
Many have been disapointed in the Nova action's lack of smoothness.
The SuperNova was Benelli's response to the Nova's shortcomings.

My brother has a 25077 870, I like it so I just bought a 81201.

I didn't see it on Remingtons site. Their photo of 25077 looks different than my brothers, the stock and forearm are the 81198 "Tactical" type, as is mine. Must be a production streamline thing.

Got it for $299. Good deal.

This.

I would probably NEVER change the stock, but knowing that I COULDN'T would drive me crazy.

I'd either front the extra cash for the SuperNova, or stick with 870. (I stuck with 870)

Good call. I am buying a plain jane Mossberg 500 for $150 tomorrow. It looks like this. I have 2 shotguns already but I just have to have this one at that price.

im waiting for a day i can roll to sgc and look at their inventory, maybe compare a few. sold a pistol today and balled out at work, so, i actually have more $ to spend than previously stated. not enough for a spx or a fabarms, but, the supernova is now an option too. thanks guys for the priceless info above.
