Ruger LCR Question

Massad, you won't remember me but years ago when Ca. Dept. of Fish and Game was converting to the Glock 22, we were conducting a conversion course. We met you on the range, it turned out you were staying at the same hotel, we spent the evening eating pizza and talking gun talk. I was one of the trainers. You commented that we had the safest training program that you had witnessed.
I see you test fired the Ruger LCR at the shot show. How does it compare with something like the Smith 642? What revolver do you carry concealed? Which would you recommend the LCR or the 642??

Hi, Ken --
I liked my test sample Ruger LCR well enough to buy it. The backup snub I usually carry on my own time is the S&W 340 M&P, maybe an ounce heavier than the LCR, because I love its sights (Big Dot tritium front, humongous U-notch rear). However, I've carried the LCR and am very confident with it. It's a good value, and with the Hogue grips co-designed with Hogue and Ruger LCR project leader Andy Zajk (hope I spelled that right!) it feels to me as if it kicks less than a J-frame of the same weight with the same ammo. I find J-frame speedloaders don't work as well in the LCR as in the J-Smith, but my backup ammo is usually in a Speed Strip, so for my needs it's a non-issue.

Hard to go wrong with either one, really. The Ruger generally has a lighter trigger pull, and I've found that women in particular are highly likely to prefer it to the S&W in side-by-side dry fire testing.
