Ok, so I got a new DPMS Classic 20". I made the mistake today of attending the N.C. State long distance rifle championship this afternoon, at Camp Butner. It was a beautiful day and the smell of gun powder, the cool toys the shooters had, and a personal invitation from the match director convinced me to attend a 'fun' military rifle match next month. I think he smelled a rookie.
So, on my way back I stopped at my favorite WalMart and lo and behold! They had .223 bulk packs in stock for $39.98/100. Must be fate.
I'm going to have to start working overtime. :crying:

If you look around, you can it cheaper than that. Palmetto state armory would be a good place to start. Instead of starting endless debates with people here, go out and shoot your gun. Have fun and enjoy yourself. Life’s to short.
PSA has had a good supply of .223/5.56 if you don't mind having ammo shipped to your house.

Palmetto and Aimsurplus are great places to get ammo online

If it is long range precision then you want to shy away from the bulk packs.
You'll have to use match ammo or start reloading.

Federal match it is.
Sorry to say, but Walmart 223 ammo and long range shooting do not go well together. You have to load at least a 75 grain bullet to reliably make it to the 600 yard line, and that is mostly a handloading proposition. You could probably shoot factory ammo at a 200 yard match, and maybe at 300, any further and you would be out of luck.

75 grain is good, 77 grain is better!

Well, a 80 or 90 grain Berger would be best.
But unless he has a 1/8 twist and likes to single load then the 77 grain would be good for a 1/8. If he has a 1/9 then he should try the match 69 fodder.

On DPMS web site the Panther Classic is listed as having a 1x9 twist.
While everything that has been said above about ammo may be true, keep the following in mind.
The WalMart Federal bulk packs is decent ammo for the purpose for which it is intended. Practice, fun, and fun practice.
Are not the things you need to do to get the best groups possible with WM ammo at 100 yards the same things you need to do to get the best groups possible with tailored handloads at 500 yards?
I don't know the OP's situation, but often people don't have everyday access to a long range shooting facility, such as might be located way out in the sticks, or on a big farm or in the desert. So, for 100-200 yards, the bulk ammo would be just fine for practice.
Nothing wrong with mail order ammo if you have a reliable place and you get what you think you are getting, but it's also nice to be able to drive to the nearest WM and pick up a few hundred rounds as needed with no shipping charges and no waiting.

$400 per 1000 is not good.
Also I've heard stories about the primer pocket on these rounds not lasting more then 3 reloads on average.
I'd rather buy some steel cased stuff for $220-$240 shipped then $400 on that brass ammo and I'm a brass ammo kind of guy when it comes to AR's.

Before we go too far with recommended loads, the competition next month will be fixed targets at 200 meters. Thanks for the help, though!

I would love to have a custom barreled bolt gun in 22 250 with a 1/8 twist barrel so I could make the 90 grain bullets group way way out there.
