bought a box of hornady 180gr hp xtp. also bought a box of sierra 180gr fpj.
I wanted a little more punch then a 158gr bullet so i got these and have worked up a load for my ruger. 12.5 gr 2400 with a col of 1.58 and a mag primer. recoil is about the same as factory loads in 158gr, accuracy is good as well. chrono is around 1050 fps i will be testing penetration and expansion as well when weather permits.
My question is has anyone else used 180gr in a pistol (not a tc) and what do you think of them?

I have tried the old 170gr Sierra JHC. It will easily run 1100fps in my 6" 686. I doubt there woul dbe much expansion, haven't tried it, but I can drive a 170grLSWC a bit faster so see little need for a heavy JHP. Wetpack test those & report back. The XTP is not known for great expansion & that usually has me dropping one weight size in any caliber.

I settled on 180s for the .357 years ago after clipping a few deer with them. Those were Laser Cast slugs. Nowadays I use Cast Performance LBT bullets for all my hunting whatever the game, large or small. When launched with 13.5grns. WW296 the penetration simply has to be seen to be believed. This load will break both shoulders on a deer with a broadside shot.

What's the barrel length you'd be using?

I think in a 6" barrel, it could be worth it. For my 4" 686, the amount of velocity I lost going from a 158 grain bullet to a 180 didn't make much sense for what I was trying to accomplish. For what it's worth, I was using 2400 and the 180 XTP as well. But who knows? Try it out for yourself. I settled on the 158 XTP load.

You might try the Remington 180 JHP.
