I'm not much of a reloader (yet) but I do have a question about a specialized load for a short-barreled .223...

Is there such a thing as a load optimized for such a short barrel?

I think not really, for 16" & over. The idea of this was listed in the 'reloading myths busted' article in a recent shooting times or guns & ammo magazine. The little bit of different in average 223 powders may not matter much with a modest change in barrel length. This is not to say that some powders are not better suited to different weight bullets for the 223. Much of the time powders are a little faster with the lighter bullets. You may also get into the 'low flash powder' discussion. I just wouldn't over think it. IMHO

Sorry, I was referring to 10in and 11.5in barrels...

But I think you meant that it really wouldn't matter much.

thanks.

I'd go with the heaviest bullet your twist rate shoots well.
