just picked up a G29, ordered a grip plug and mag extensions.......no to see what holsters are out there that work by regular folks who use them every day....thinking of the "el cheapo" Glock holster....seems to do what i want and at a very good price but i'd like to hear from the everyday Joe/Jane on what they use....

ha ha, nice but not a G29.

kip thats nice.....

one thing i see about some of the IWB hybred rigs is all the polymer (plastic) span on the rig....while it helps make it stable it doesnt form to the shape of your body like leather. also, many use plastic belt clips instead of leather belt loops.

i guess in a perfect world i could buy a rig like the Milt Sparks "Watch Six" without the $135.00+ price tag.

Haven't got the hang of posting pics yet, but I've carried a G29 in a Galco Concealable since Sept. of '97.
4 different gun shop jobs, 1 gun, 1 holster.
The Galco isn't cheap, but they last.
My oldest Galco isn't even marked Galco, it's marked as being from "The Original Jackass Leather Co." & was made when they were still in Glenview, IL.
It's for a 4" S&W "N" frame & has been in use almost forever.
The only time I don't use a Galco is for USPSA/IPSC competition, as Kydex is faster. But I wouldn't want to wear one all day.

My G29 is my hiking gun. So it gets carried in my Blackhawk waist pack. :)

yeah, ive pondered that but im trying to stay away from the whole man purse thing.

seriously, the man purse doesnt go with just any dress code. i need something that i can use when casually dressed or suited up for Sunday dinner so to speak. you know, to carry a gun without looking like youre carrying a gun or a first aid kit or girl scout cookies or a portable oxygen can.....

I know everyone has a tendency to look a little sideways at the fanny pack like a old retired tourist doing the full Sarasota ( straw sun hat, plaid shorts up to the chest, black socks and sandals), but if you hike for a long distance a holster is a little uncomfortable. Those packs are mutil-purpose.

cowboywannabe
04-20-2010, 06:25
i see your point, but if you only hike 10% of the time youre up and about......just saying.

im not looking for a hiking rig or wilderness rig, or out in the woods rig.......im talking about regular everyday going to the grocery store, movie theater, resturant, social gatherings, parties, school plays and school sports....

id like a Milt Sparks W6 clone without the Milt Sparks W6 price....

thanks for input just the same though.

The Galco Royal Guard is the IWB holster I keep coming back to. It's expensive but you only have to buy it once.

I haven't found a great OWB holster yet, but the Glock holster works pretty well and you can't beat the price.

It's not only about the dreaded gender-confusion issue of a "man purse," ;) ... but in many parts of the Republic a fanny/waist pack SCREAMS:

"I have a pistol in here!"

It's well-known among civies, BadGuys and LE what packs of that recognizable shape are designed to hold - especially in black (whether "tactical" or otherwise).

I use to like them, but they've long since lost their "discreetness" in public venues. Plus I've found, having handled several makes of them, that waist packs are generally slower to draw from, certainly slower than the SideArmor IWB holding my G29 at my 4 o'clock.

In the same time needed to pull down the front of the pack in order to access the interior holster or holder, I could have my G29 drawn from IWB and leveled at the "target's" face.

And the SideArmor makes for a friggin' quick 10mm-in-your-face draw stroke.

I ordered a Galco Concealable Belt holster for my G29 SF as it looks to hold the gun close to the waist and should be no problem with one of my polos over it.

How's it going brother been a while. How are the TFO's holding up on your G29?

I'm considering them for my G29SF but worried about the longevity issues some have had with them.

Thanks :wavey:

Fire_Medic,
You're going to love the Galco. I've been using that rig with my G29 since Sept. of '97, covers easily with a "T" or a Polo.
Especially if you're built w/ shoulders bigger than the waist size. I wear a 52" coat w/a 34-36" waist, so it's a 2X (from a Harley Shop) or 3X "T".
One problem......it's so comfortable when you get used to it, you might leave it on when you shouldn't. We don't have concealed carry here in the Democratik Peoples Republik of IL !

I don't mind IWB carry but am slowly moving to OWB because it's much more comfortable. I'm not a small guy @ 5'11, 235lbs, so I don't see why I couldn't hide the G29 with this combo. I once had a G30SF with a Kramer belt scabbard that disappeared with any of my polos, so I figured this would work well with the G29 as well.

Thanks for your input.

The Galco is the most comfortable holster of the type that I've found.

It's called an AGrip. It has a very nice feel to it. It gets gripier when your hands sweat too.

The first one is the Phantom light holster which is going to work great as a open-carry hunting holster - This can be equipped for conceal carry - but I'll reserve my "home made" holster (holster 2) for that - you can see why in the next set of pics below...

My home made holster (I actually made this personally with some scrap fabric and a piece of plastic off an Uncle Mike's) can also be used OWB - and it is more comfortable - but OWB requires another layer of clothing for concealment, so I generally use it IWB.

I ALWAYS have the TLR mounted on the pistol - FBI statistics are very clear in that a high majority of self defense situations occur at night. I also have Tritium inserts on my sights (the rear is an adjustable Novak's in case you are wondering) - but tritium only helps you keep an eye on your sights - you still need to be able to see what you're shooting at.

I have the pistol on me IWB right now - and have carried it this way for over 3 months all day long and can tell you that the comfort factor is very high. I used padded scrap material for the holster (the material is very similar to what blackhawk uses in their non-light holsters - only I added a layer of camo cordura on the inside as after a while that softer liner wears out.

Typically in the summer I use my SmartCarry
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/3702/edcandothergood003.jpg

In the winter months I use a CTAC IWB. I love both holsters.

FWIW, I have the Glock brand Sport/Carry holster. It works very well but its not something I'd use for concealed carry, however, its fantastic for a lightweight, water resistant "woods" holster, for example.

Well, for one thng, it doesn't "conceal" the pistol. I mean, it would conceal it under a jacket or long shirt, but it isn't designed for anything more than general concealment rather than CCW. It a belt slide holster... it holds the pistol OUTSIDE of your pants whereas an IWB holster will tuck the gun into your pants. My SmartCarry actually COMPLETELY hides the pistol under clothes.

Basically, its not designed for CCW is why .... Hope this helps.

Nothing says, "Shoot me first" quite like a fanny pack, especially if someone is wearing shorts or pants with pockets. Maybe to and from the gym, but event then, it's kinda obvious.

I've never been comfortable with a IWB type holster, but with even a t shirt my 29 hides quite well in the Galco holster.
Given a dark shirt (typically a H-D shirt) most folks that come into the gunshop have no idea that I'm carrying.
With a windbreaker, being a lard *****, I can hide my Ruger RedHawk ! (except for the obvious list to one side.....)

Kegs,
If I lost 70, I'd be anything BUT healthy !
High-school graduation weight was 235 lbs.....
100 yd in 13.0 in full football gear.
waist is still 35"
coat size is 48-50

and it was a bit ago, class of 1968 (just turned 59)

Last time I was in for a cardio check, the Dr's. QUIT with the treadmill after 20 min, max incline, max speed... heart rate wasn't near what they said it should be.
I'm not a desk jockey, I do heavy metal fab, for the last 35 yrs !
Can't run real good anymore, broke an ankle playing tennis in college. IT don't like to move real good.

I just kid about being a lard bucket.
