Powder Baffle?

What is it good for? I have several powder measures but have never used the baffle that comes with them. I've always thought that they look like they would impede the flow of powder out of the powder measure. What are they supposed to do? What am I missing?

They are for consistency of drop weight, intended to compensate for decreasing & varying amounts of powder in the hopper and work quite well. Minus a baffle, powders can even compress and tend to "bridge" the opening. Lee is the only manufacturer I know of that does'nt use a true baffle but has a workable alternative built into their hoppers. I personally can't imagine loading without one and on my Dillon, I even added a Uniquetek baffle. My powder drops with most every powder I use are very, very, consistent and repeatable. Some very precision-conscious reloaders use double baffles set at 90 degrees to each other.

I too added the Uniquetek baffle to my Dillon... it's a great design.

As D. says... it insures the amount of powder you have in the hopper doesn't affect the powder throw... it takes all the weight of the powder upon itself, not the bottom of the hopper.

OK, thanks guys. I'll give it a try. I've always thought I had good consistency without the baffle as evidenced by checking the weight of powder throws and chrono results, but I'll take your wisdom to heart.

What you can do is put a funnel on top of the powder measure then fill it up with powder. It well keep the powder too the bottom of the funnel. Then check too see if it makes any difference. Throw a couple of charges before weighting too get every thing settled in before weighing.

Thanks for the link. I've been wanting to add a baffle to my OLD Uniflo for years.
